workingmom Posted July 4, 2016 Posted July 4, 2016 (edited) Anyone using Michael Clay Thompson for Eng/Lit for 8th grade? How are you scheduling it in your week? Do you teach it or use one of the online providers that uses that program? Edited July 4, 2016 by workingmom Quote
Targhee Posted July 6, 2016 Posted July 6, 2016 We used a mix - did Magic Lens 1 for grammar. We read and discussed together for 20 min or so. We did exercises together orally. We used Essay Voyage (vs Academic Writing). This was in addition to WWS 1/2. We read, analyzed sentences, answers questions together for about 20 min a day. She did writing assignments on her time. We did not use Word Within a Word because she had other vocabulary work. She did read sections in Caesar's Englush on her own for fun (word nerd). We did not use the lit. We did Music of the Hemispheres as a family for 10-15 min about 1-2 times per week. I "schedule" it roughly by time, but utilize natural breaks in chapters as stopping points. Quote
Mona Posted July 7, 2016 Posted July 7, 2016 I have an eighth grader this coming year and I've been researching MCT the last couple days trying to get a feel for how it all fits together throughout the year and where to start. Thanks for asking this question. I'll be listening in. :bigear: Quote
Mona Posted July 21, 2016 Posted July 21, 2016 I came back to post again since there weren't many responses. I've noticed there aren't as many people using this in eighth grade and beyond. This will be our first year to use MCT. DD will be using level five minus the writing. MCT recommended we start with Essay Voyage rather than AAW1. She is also going to use the Shadow Trilogy for literature. I will be doing the teaching and I'm using the recommended schedule in the back of the parent manual. Quote
GeoKitty Posted July 21, 2016 Posted July 21, 2016 We will be using level 5 (Magic Lens 1 level) in its entirety with my sixth and eighth graders…. they have both completed Town and Voyage levels. I just received the books; the set up is slightly different from previous levels. You first do Magic Lens and Word within the Word. They correspond through lesson 10 WiTW. When you finish Magic Lens, you start 4Practice. Then you start AAW. Poetry fits in whenever. So does Literature. We are also doing Cover Story. So our weekly plan will be: Mon and Tues - Magic Lens, WiTW (eventually AAW and poetry) Wed - Fri - Cover Story and vocab quiz When Cover story finishes in i think 22 weeks, we will do the writing assignments from AAW. And we will do Search (We started a few months ago) and Time trilogy lit throughout. HTH Quote
mom2scouts Posted July 25, 2016 Posted July 25, 2016 I've been using MCT for a few years and have been trying to decide if I'm going to continue for 8th grade. I really like MCT, but it seems a bit different at this level. I think we'll be using Magic Lens, WWTW, and the practice book, and using something else for the other subjects. Quote
