ereks mom Posted July 1, 2016 Posted July 1, 2016 (edited) I want each of my students to have her own paperback copy of a combination dictionary-thesaurus. I looked for an American Heritage dictionary-thesaurus, but didn't find one available in paperback, so I guess it's Webster's. So, which of these Webster's volumes do you think sounds best for middle schoolers? https://www.amazon.com/Merriam-Websters-Dictionary-Thesaurus-Newest-Merriam-Webster/dp/0877797323/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1467409737&sr=8-1&keywords="dictionary+thesaurus"https://www.amazon.com/Websters-Dictionary-Thesaurus-Students-Second/dp/1596951079/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1467409915&sr=8-8&keywords="dictionary+thesaurus"https://www.amazon.com/Websters-Dictionary-Thesaurus-Merriam-Webster/dp/1596950854/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1467409915&sr=8-4&keywords=%22dictionary+thesaurus%22 https://www.amazon.com/Websters-World-Dictionary-Thesaurus-Paper/dp/0764565451/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1467409915&sr=8-2&keywords=%22dictionary+thesaurus%22 Edited July 1, 2016 by ereks mom Quote
Arcadia Posted July 1, 2016 Posted July 1, 2016 We have used the last one linked in hardcover and it was okay, as in does its job. When do you need them? Target and Staples have the $3 version in thinner paper for back to school sales every year so far. Sometimes even Dollar Tree Store has them. 1 Quote

We won't need them until we start back to school (late August). Thanks! Quote
Farrar Posted July 2, 2016 Posted July 2, 2016 We also have the last one on that list and it's been fine for my middle schoolers. Originally, I tried to research which ones would be "best" but in the end, I got it for 50 cents at the thrift store and it's been fine. 1 Quote
Based on Faith Academy Posted July 3, 2016 Posted July 3, 2016 I have no true recommendations to give you but have you noticed that there are some dictionaries that do not even have quite a few words that you would expect in them? I am sure there has to be a way to find out if that is so in the one you decide on. For instance, my son has one he brings back and forth from his dad's house to here and so on. It is an awesome dictionary and I do not even remember where I bought it. Then I bought my daughter one this past year year and I could not believe the amount of words we were unable to find in the dictionary. Just my 2 cents to keep in mind when choosing a dictionary. 1 Quote

This. We have a hardcover children's dictionary from Scholastic that has 664 pages, but too often my 8yo was looking for words that were not in it. I went to a used bookstore and looked up 'impunity' in the dictionaries they had (a random word we'd recently had to look up and couldn't) - if the dictionary didn't have that word, it was out of the running. For the remaining ones, I looked at the layout, how clear the definitions were, etc. I ended up getting a college dictionary from Webster's. What layout etc you prefer is going to be personal anyway. It wasn't a combination thesaurus, so I wouldn't have any recommendations for that. 1 Quote

Yeah, I love the online version myself, and they all say they use a dictionary app for their homework. But I do not allow them to bring their phones or tablets to school, so we have to look up words the old-fashioned way while they're here. I'm just mean that way. LOL! ;p 1 Quote
