Susie in MS
My dd has always had an allergy to math. What we have found that works best for her is Math Lessons for a Living Education. It is very CM (I know there are those who feel otherwise) with the real life application, short lessons, etc. This approach has saved us. Well, the revised book 5 is not due out till 7/28 (this expected date of release has been moved more than once). Problem is that we are waiting on book 6 which is in the process of being written. We need something to either hold us over or take its place.I looked at SCM's Your Business Math and it looked good, but then I have heard of more than one person say it becomes very monotonous after a little while. I have looked at other maths. Math Mammoth- no way, no how. MEP- you have got to be kidding. R&S and Study Time are good, but are text at this point, and have far too many problems (even with cutting the lesson just the visual puts the fear of God in my dd's heart). ABeka moves a bit fast. BJU-requires the gold in Fort Knox.Does anyone have any suggestion for a light paced, real life approach, math workbook that is not made of gold for a 6th grader? By 7th grade we will probably transition to Teaching Textbooks, but I will be saving for that between now and then. Tenaj
Have you looked at Life of Fred? Maybe a combo of Life of Fred and Your Business Math for this year? Another suggestion: If you like R&S but think the number of problems would be an issue, just use it without letting your dd see the book. I would make up worksheets showing only the work that you wanted her to do. Now my son was the opposite with R&S. We used the student book like a workbook and wrote in it whenever possible and he loved, loved, loved to see my marker come out and cross off the rows of problems he didn't have to do. I would cross them out with a bright marker and then circle the ones he had to do and after that he always felt like he was getting away with something - LOL!

We use rod and staff and most days we just do the odd numbered problems unless he's struggling. Also, I have no problem doing the lesson over two or more days.
