creekland Posted July 1, 2016 Posted July 1, 2016 Wishing all of our Canadian boardies a fun holiday today! Any plans? This is one week I miss not living along the border anymore. It was nice having two holiday celebrations in a week's time. 1 Quote
wintermom Posted July 1, 2016 Posted July 1, 2016 Thanks! We're going to our local Canada Day celebrations, where there is a fair with rides and children's games. In the evening there is live music and fireworks. In between dh and I are playing tennis. 1 Quote
hornblower Posted July 1, 2016 Posted July 1, 2016 Thanks! No special plans. Puttering. In honor of Canada Day - How Canada is putting the world to shame on Syrian Refugees, in one paragraph http://www.vox.com/2016/7/1/12078162/canada-syrian-refugees & the long story the brief above is based on - Refugees Encounter a Foreign Word: Welcome http://www.nytimes.com/2016/07/01/world/americas/canada-syrian-refugees.html 2 Quote
Bluegoat Posted July 1, 2016 Posted July 1, 2016 We are having a quiet day - I did some weeding this morning, and dh made waffles. I made some merngues for eton mess for desssert tonight, we'll have hamburgers as well. One of my daughters s going to a sleepover, the rest of us will go to the fireworks. It's a beautiful, hot day. As far as Syrian refugees - I am a bit frustrated myself. My parish church has had money and housing in place since February for a family that is slated to come under private sponsorship. But they were just behind the big push of government sponsored refugees, and then when they met that quota the gov pretty much dismantled all the infrastructure to get people in. It's really causing trouble for some groups that had got housing in place but are now in trouble because they are spending the money raised to support those people for the year on housing with no one in it. Luckily we are not in that position, but the bureaucracy is so stupid - our family Is now having to redo their background checks because they had a new baby. Anyway, that is an annoying government thing rather than a Canada proper thing, so yes, happy Canada-Dominion Day! 1 Quote
