MrsWeasley Posted June 28, 2016 Posted June 28, 2016 I must have missed the thread on this. I can't decide between pre-ordering the kindle edition or the print edition. I love reading things on my kindle, but I worry a book like this would be difficult to use on the Kindle. Thoughts? Which did you all order? Quote
Ethel Mertz Posted June 28, 2016 Posted June 28, 2016 I'm going to order the print edition. I like being able to flip back and forth, take notes, put post-it notes in, etc. I know there's probably a comparable way to do that on Kindle, but for this sort of thing, I like to be able to hold the actual book. Quote
EKT Posted June 28, 2016 Posted June 28, 2016 I actually don't own a Kindle, but even if I did, I would only ever get the hard copy for this type of book. (I plan to pre-order my hard copy of TWTM very soon!) For me, with a book like this, I need to hold it in my hands. I need something I can sit with on the couch, something I'll be able to page through and make notes in and put stickies all over. There are so many different lists and categories, etc., that I think it would be much harder to use in digital form. (But I also typically dislike digital books in general...) But, I'd pick whichever form you prefer to work with. Quote
Guest Posted June 28, 2016 Posted June 28, 2016 With as much pencil marking, dog earing, and sticky noting that I've done in my previous editions, there's no way I'd want it in digital format this time. Quote
prairiewindmomma Posted June 28, 2016 Posted June 28, 2016 I'm going to go print version. I prefer iBooks to kindle in terms of features, but a book like WTM is going to be full of notes, post-its, and I'm likely to photocopy a page or two of lists to take to the library. Accessing the list digitally for the library would be nice, but I thumb and flip a lot between sections. Quote
Guest Posted June 28, 2016 Posted June 28, 2016 I have #1, 2, and 3 in print and I ordered #4 in print, as well. :) Quote
purpleowl Posted June 28, 2016 Posted June 28, 2016 Definitely print, for a reference book like this. Ebooks, IMO, are much better suited to "read it straight through" books than to "flip around to find what you want" books. 1 Quote
Syllieann Posted June 28, 2016 Posted June 28, 2016 (edited) I ordered in print. I only get the kindle if there is a substantial cost difference. In this case, the kindle edition is nearly as much as the print...I'm not going to tie up a device just for that. Edited June 28, 2016 by Syllieann Quote
prairiewindmomma Posted June 28, 2016 Posted June 28, 2016 I have mine all on a shelf together. I'm really hoping that the spine formatting is similar so that they will all look nice and friendly together. I really hate it when people go all crazy and do some similar spines and then mess up the vibe by switching up spine designs. It's one of the reasons Rick Riordan's books have prominent display in my home, while Robert Jordan's and L.E. Modesitt's books got stuck into hidden corners. Quote
73349 Posted June 28, 2016 Posted June 28, 2016 I ordered the print edition. I feel that Kindle books are so much more vulnerable to loss that I don't use them for anything that important. I also expect to mark the print copy up some, in ways that are harder electronically. Quote

RenaInTexas Posted June 28, 2016 Posted June 28, 2016 (edited) I guess I am a lone wolf. I am going Kindle. I mark my kindle books up digitally and I can easily find a note simply by searching for a keyword or scrolling through my notes list. I can also color code notes or use different types of marking for different types of notes. I actually find digital much more efficient and organized. Plus, I've always got all my books with me...in the cloud. Also DH can read it at the same time. I don't have a kindle. I have a samsung android nook with the kindle app. Edited June 28, 2016 by RenaInTexas 1 Quote
AmandaVT Posted June 28, 2016 Posted June 28, 2016 I'm a kindle person for pretty much all of my reading and purchased the 3rd edition for my kindle. I wish I had ordered it in hard copy. It's hard to use as a reference book in kindle format. I pre-ordered the 4th edition in hard copy and am very excited! 1 Quote

Jackie Posted June 28, 2016 Posted June 28, 2016 The only version I have is on Kindle. If I get the next edition, it will also be Kindle. It's great to have a hyperlinked TOC. The edition I have is perfectly good for what I want, though, so I'm not sold on a need for another edition. Quote
chicagoshannon Posted June 28, 2016 Posted June 28, 2016 I ordered the Kindle edition but am now 2nd guessing that decision. I have a month to change my mind I guess. Quote
Syllieann Posted June 28, 2016 Posted June 28, 2016 Kindle edition is $20 while the print version is $30, at least on Amazon.Yeah, that's what I was looking at. I'd pay $8 at most for the kindle version. Quote
luuknam Posted June 30, 2016 Posted June 30, 2016 Yeah, that's what I was looking at. I'd pay $8 at most for the kindle version. As a side note, if you have Amazon Prime and buy physical stuff, you can often select a slower shipping option and get a $1 ebook credit. If you do that multiple times, you can knock quite a lot off the price of an ebook - I just bought the kindle edition of History of the Medieval World for under $10 using all my credits (normally it's like $23, I think). The one thing to keep in mind is that the credits do expire after a few months. I'll be asking the library to buy the 4th edition of TWTM. I've got the kindle version of the 3rd edition, and my wife gets mad at me for buying too many physical books. I find the kindle edition for TWTM3 works just fine for me, and would go kindle again, if I were to buy TWTM4 (but I don't see a point, assuming I can convince the library to buy it, which should be easy since my local branch doesn't have any of the editions despite being one of the bigger branches). Quote
Caclcoca Posted June 30, 2016 Posted June 30, 2016 I ordered the hard copy. I often sit with my WTM book open to multiple pages with post it notes on many other pages. I can't look at two pages at once on my kindle. Quote
