Can you recommend a hotel between Carlsbad Caverns NM and Cloudcroft?

Comfort Inn, comfort suites, Rodeway, Econolodge, and any other members of that chain. Those I mention have locations in Carlsbad and dayton.

You can definitely get a room for one night. They never asked how many children we have (five). Many allow pets ( if that's your thing), and many serve complementary breakfast.

They range from clean, but unimpressive to really very nice. All are surprisingly affordable.

Thanks. I had not looked in Dayton yet.  I had hoped to stay in the mountains, but I think we'll just have to drive the next day.

We have done a rental cabin in Cloudcroft that sleeps 8.  If you're interested, LMK and I'll message you the link.  Very clean & well-cared for.

We've been to Cloudcroft a few times but that is the only place we've stayed.

We only need 1 night, or I would totally do that!
