ProudGrandma Posted June 26, 2016 Posted June 26, 2016 a friend of ours made us some marinated meat for our upcoming camping trip. She said she took the meat out of the freezer on Friday morning...thawed it on her countertop...marinated it...and put it in the freezer around 10 that night. then Sat morning...she took it out of the freezer around 6:30 (because she didn't want to forget it) and she delivered it about 8:30...so...if those times are correct...is it possible for the meat to be cold, but completely thawed by 8:30 ? Because it was completely thawed when she delivered it. the meat is 4 pork chops (2 per quart bags) and 2 bags of chicken legs (5 legs per bag). I put the meat in our camper fridge right away. Our plan is to eat one meat tonight...and the other tomorrow night. Would you...or not?? Quote
cintinative Posted June 26, 2016 Posted June 26, 2016 Personally I have gotten food poisoning from a scenario like that, so no, I wouldn't. Mind you, when it happened to me I was overseas. Here is my thought--it is not safe to thaw meat on a countertop, ever. Then she marinated it (on the countertop??). Also unsafe. Then she put it in the freezer overnight--it was probably not totally frozen by morning--then she left it out again for two hours. The way I see it there were two time windows where it could have become a risk. I'm definitely not a risk taker but I would not do it. Especially on a camping trip. And, especially if there are kids involved. 3 Quote
SemiSweet Posted June 26, 2016 Posted June 26, 2016 I would not. I will marinate on the counter sometimes, but I do not ever refreeze. It is unlikely that it could've thawed that quickly too. 1 Quote
regentrude Posted June 26, 2016 Posted June 26, 2016 I would be hesitant. She said she took the meat out of the freezer on Friday morning...thawed it on her countertop...marinated it...and put it in the freezer around 10 that night. Did the meat marinate on the counter all day Friday? In that case, I would not eat it. The fact that it was not frozen would not bother me. I don't see a need to refreeze marinated meat overnight; keeping it refrigerated would have been entirely sufficient. 1 Quote
ProudGrandma Posted June 26, 2016 Author Posted June 26, 2016 she had to initially thaw the meat in order to separate it. I do not think she marinated it on the countertop....I think she made the marinade and then popped them back in the freezer...but now as I am saying this...did she thaw them all day because she didn't get them in the freezer until 10ish. I think I will not be feeding these to my family...afterall. 2 Quote
Kassia Posted June 26, 2016 Posted June 26, 2016 I wouldn't eat it. I go by, "When in doubt, throw it out." It's not worth the risk IMO. 2 Quote

In future, she can put the blob of frozen meat in a new bag with the marinade, put it in the fridge, and by the next morning it would be marinating and still slightly frozen. The step of defrosting to separate was unnecessary IMO. I hope you can scavenge something else to eat! Edited June 26, 2016 by cintinative 3 Quote
goldberry Posted June 26, 2016 Posted June 26, 2016 (edited) No way. And I thaw things on the countertop regularly contrary to advice. But not all day like that, and then refreezing and rethawing? Nope. What a waste though, meat is expensive! Edited June 26, 2016 by goldberry 1 Quote
Miss Peregrine Posted June 26, 2016 Posted June 26, 2016 How did you find out the process of thawing/marinating? Quote
SKL Posted June 26, 2016 Posted June 26, 2016 I would probably taste a little of it (after cooking it to death), just so I could tell her I ate it and loved it. But I would plan something else for dinner. :) Quote
