JumpyTheFrog Posted June 24, 2016 Posted June 24, 2016 Other than talking to professors and using a college's career office services/websites, what are some good ways to find internships? I am starting classes at a community college in the fall and I want to arrange internships, although my program doesn't officially have them. (Some programs in other departments do co-ops, but mine doesn't.) Quote
J-rap Posted June 25, 2016 Posted June 25, 2016 We've found that the best way to find internships, apart from obvious places -- your college, known national workshops/seminars within specific fields -- is word-of-mouth. Talk to people you know in the field. Also, contact known organizations/businesses within your community that would possibly take on an intern in your field. Even if they can't take you on, they might have other places to suggest. Also, we randomly have found a few options just by looking on the indeed.com website. We've entered our city + "seasonal employment" and sometimes come up with internship-type positions. We actually never went so far as to apply for them, since other things turned up, but it might be an option. 1 Quote
JoanHomeEd Posted June 26, 2016 Posted June 26, 2016 This link has internships for both high school students and undergraduates: https://people.rit.edu/gtfsbi/Symp/summer.htm#skip DC tried the "Opportunities for High School Students" list and was offered 1 internship. However, DC had to reject it because it was hard to find any suitable housing close to the research university. HTH Quote

This has been my experience working with college students. You have to do your leg work to get good opportunities. Blindly applying to lists of internships found online is about 5% effective, whereas applying when you have a contact made at a seminar, hackathon, campus visit, user group, professional association, etc. is usually 50% effective. Join things, go to things, talk to people. Opportunities will appear. :) 1 Quote
