This is our 22nd year of homeschooling, just to put that out there.

I am looking for affordable online options.  We are a one-income, large family.  Many of the online options researched by me have not been persuasive.  K12 and Connections Academy, the 2 big ones that seem to be the loudest in marketing, seem to be lots of online computer-based learning, which do not work well with our children.

Abeka Online is very limited in the courses they offer, especially in high school.   This is in our price-range, just to give you an idea.

Easy Peasy and Schoolhouse Teachers are not the modes of learning we are seeking.

I have checked into the WTM online offerings, but they are not in our budget.

If you have any other ideas to offer, I would appreciate it.

Thanks!

Homeworks by Precept meetings offer BJU online classes for 50% off during the summer if you order 6 or more classes and 25% off if you order 3 or more. I don't know how you feel about BJU and I am sure their offerings are not any better that Abeka, but thought I would throw that out there since you mentioned Abeka.

Hope you are able to find the classes your are looking for. :001_smile:

Landry has a lot of regular academic classes and electives for older kids. They offer a live weekly class online with daily assignments on your own. The trick to making it affordable is to buy generic semesters early at a big discount or buy someone's extras. If you try to go in for the current year at full price, it is really high.

Homeschool Connections has live classes -- or, more affordably, unlimited recorded classes for a low price of $30/month. Some of the recorded classes have an option for teacher grading or feedback for an extra cost.

Acellus is what I would suggest.  They have 2 different options. First, full time credit mode- you get 6 courses at a time for $30 per month or $300 for the year.  They have all the basic High School classes.  Then there's tutor mode.  It's ala carte where you choose your courses and pay for each one separately. Courses are $50 each.  There are some issues with some of the courses, so having a credit mode option to at least sample the classes (some of the teachers are crazy boring) might be a good idea.  We used it last year but since they switched to the credit or tutor mode it won't work for us.

Yes, the Virtual Homeschool Group is free. All classes are taught by volunteers. Dd16 has done biology and chemistry through them (using Apologia), and will do Anatomy and Physiology through them next year. Tammy Moore teaches the science and is an excellent teacher. Other classes are taught by other volunteers and it is expanding, it seems. I facilitated a Spanish conversation class last year, the spring saw a Japanese conversation class start (by a native Japanese person in Japan), a lot of maths using Saxon is taught, and they are getting volunteers to teach IEW and Mystery of History courses. There are quite a few more classes offered as well.
