Esse Quam Videri Posted June 24, 2016 Posted June 24, 2016 I know CM recommended focusing on one habit at a time. However, while focusing on a single habit, do you find it beneficial to break it down into multiple steps? For example, if you were working on "cleanliness" (which obviously has many facets), would you divide it into smaller, more measurable subhabits (personal hygiene, tidying room, shower schedule, etc), focusing on only a single subhabit at a time? Or would you work on all of the subhabits simultaneously as part of cleanliness? I know everyone does things differently... This may seem like splitting hairs. But I would love to hear what's worked best for you all. Quote
Slache Posted June 24, 2016 Posted June 24, 2016 I've focused on habits since toddlerhood and introduced them as they became appropriate, therefore breaking them up. A child can wash his hands before he can shower himself. Quote
Esse Quam Videri Posted June 24, 2016 Author Posted June 24, 2016 Yes, that makes sense! Sorry, I should have clarified that I'm asking in reference to older children. We've naturally worked on a lot of the habits of the mind and also of the heart, but REALLY neglected the practical, outward life ones... Like neatness, order, cleanliness, routine, etc. Quote
Slache Posted June 24, 2016 Posted June 24, 2016 Sorry, I'm feeding a newborn and yelling a recipe across the house at my husband as I type. I had a point and that point was that I think habits flow more naturally when broken up because that's how they learn anyway. Okay. Goodnight! 2 Quote
Esse Quam Videri Posted June 24, 2016 Author Posted June 24, 2016 So Sadie, how long would you spend on each of those small steps? Quote
ScoutTN Posted June 24, 2016 Posted June 24, 2016 Yes! Definitely break larger habits into its constituent parts. For example, 'tidy your room!' So many bits to that. My kids have needed a list for this! I started with only one or two things on the list, then added more as those became easy. 1 Quote
