New here, questions re Notebooks

I am new to homeschooling and have 3 kids ages: 6, 4, and 2. I have most everything ready to start school in July and was re-reading sections of TWTM, when I realized I have some questions regarding the Notebooks. At first I thought it was 2 different things: 1 being the parent saves the work the child completes in the designated sections and 2 the child has "free" time to write, draw, and create in his own personal notebook. However, now I am wondering if it is all supposed to be a combination of the worksheets they completed as well as a more intentional notebook time where they write/draw about what they learned in that particular subject/day to show comprehension. I might be overthinking this, but any suggestions will be appreciated. Thank you
