SKL Posted June 18, 2016 Posted June 18, 2016 What types / formats of learning have your middle-schoolers preferred, assuming summer school is a given? I'm most interested in math reinforcement and problem solving - stuff that requires some thinking when one has already had a very stimulating day. I recently bought my kids laptops, so they have internet access, and I hope they will find online math activities somewhat motivating. They will be using Khan Academy as part of a 6-week online summer program starting Monday. I could continue that after the 6 weeks if it works well. I can also get 1 free month of Splash Math through an arrangement with the library. (Is that any good?) The library also provided links to the following free math "fun" sites. I don't know much about these - any thoughts? Coolmath 4 Kids Coomath games (which my kids did in school and enjoy) gymnasium for the brain Hooda Math Math Fact Cafe Math Game Time Math Is Fun Math Playground I am wondering, how will I know if my kids really did anything useful when they "work" online? Do you recommend any online math resource(s) in particular? Besides online stuff, I hope to work in some math story books, Beast Academy, the occasional worksheet or problem-solving activity, integrated cooking/art/math/game activities .... I do get a lot of groans for most of these. They will attend a mid-August back-to-school camp that they enjoy. Quote
regentrude Posted June 18, 2016 Posted June 18, 2016 (edited) In middle school, my kids did math by continuing to work through the AoPS textbooks. I am not a big fan of online math stuff. My kids never had any interest in math games on the computer or the like. Other summer learning that went well was copious amounts of reading, and listening to audio lectures. Besides math, we have not done any required seat work in the summer. Edited June 18, 2016 by regentrude Quote
Arcadia Posted June 19, 2016 Posted June 19, 2016 My DS10 does the aops amc8 online class for summer because he wants to do well for AMC8 in November. My DS11 spends an hour daily (weekdays) finishing his aosp textbook. He is in an aops python programming online class for summer. Quote
EndOfOrdinary Posted June 19, 2016 Posted June 19, 2016 I had my son bake, but I hid all the measurung cups other than the 1/3. He really liked making cookies and got very good at converting. Quote
Melissa B Posted June 19, 2016 Posted June 19, 2016 (edited) My dd12 does Alcumus through the summer. Edited June 19, 2016 by Melissa B Quote
