BlsdMama
They are SO cheap on Ebay that I'm wondering what they can and can't do. Can they run current audible apps? Can they have Overdrive books added to them? Or are they just so far out of date that they can't really be used at all?

I might attempt to load audible/overdrive if I were given one for free. But considering the last ios operating system that supported it was released *six* years ago. (And that one had problems -- overheating the battery and such...) I wouldn't count on anything. (I upgraded to iphone 5 from iphone 4s two years ago because my 4s was starting to show performance issues. But I did not have problems with Overdrive or audible at the time.) Forget-Me-Not
You'll probably find that most apps won't work anymore. I have an iPad mini that is almost 3 yrs old and I'm running into apps that don't support it anymore. A quick peek at the App Store told me Audible needs iOS 8 or later to work and Overdrive needs 7.1 or later. I think you're going to find a 3 is just too far out of date to do anything. Its not going to work. The last version of ios that works (Sorta) on the iphone 3 is 4.something.
HSmomof2
I have a 4S, and it's still doing fine. I don't have any app problems yet, though I'm sure it's not too far down the road that I will. I had a 3GS about 3 years ago, and I was having problems updating or being able to download new apps at that time.
wendy not in HI
I have a 4 (not S) and have recently started having app trouble - the fitbit app doesn't work on it, and my favorite running tracker seems to have stopped working (mapmyrun) but most of the things I use every day are still working great - phone, text, itunes, my banking app where I deposit checks, email, the internet, camera, maps, kindle, facebook messenger, etc. I think I'll use it another year or so... AK_Mom4
An iPhone 3 makes a good music player - you can still download music onto it using iTunes. It can be used as an alarm clock or timer. It can still be used as a phone on most networks (voice/text/ data). But all but the oldest apps will have problems running on that old version of IOS.
Haiku
I was unable to install Overdrive on my IPhone 3. It was too old. I'm not sure I was even able to install it on my 4.
bolt.
I still have a 3 (an old one of mine) which my kids use as audible on: but it has had that app on it since it was current. It still works just fine. I don't know if it could be added now, but if you are buying used, perhaps ask if the previous owner has audible on it already? nd293
I don't think you'll be able to load the audible app (it says iOS8 or higher) but you will be able to play audible books by saving them into iTunes (I think it uses the Music app). That's how we used to do it pre-app so I imagine it still works.
