But all the hotels are booked!  Some conferences going on and I have to look a bit further out.  My hubby has big meeting near Dupont Circle and the children and I want to either shop :) or see DC museum stuff.

Before I get too far in planning the fun, I need to get a hotel squared away.  Does anyone with familiarity of the area have a recommendation?

I talked to someone who said Tysons Corner might be a good idea since it's not too far from Pennsylvania Ave.  And it's right near Tysons which would be fun.

Thoughts?

Tysons is a good 30 minutes from Dupont, unless I'm mixing up my DC geography.

Sorry I can't be of more help, but Tysons isn't that close to Dupont, although there is now a metro line that goes all the way out there. And there's a gigantic mall and such.

I didn't look it up, phone rep for a hotel chain said it's roughly 18 minutes...

I just don't know the area of where to even look.  Every hotel I've called inside the area I can see on google near Dupont is booked solid!!

Tysons is too far if you want quality time downtown. Georgetown in DC, Arlington, VA, Alexandria isn't too far out and is fairly direct route to some areas, but will certainly be more travel time than Arlington.

Eta: But if you mainly want to shop, then yes, Tyson Corner.

Yes, but phone rep doesn't know anything about DC traffic. ;)

I live near Tysons and my dh works at Dupont Circle.  It takes him 35 minutes on a weekend to get from here to there.  It's more like an hour drive during the week.

Also Pennsylavia Ave is not near Tysons or Dupont Circle.  I mean if you wanted to walk for 45 minutes you could go from the White House to Dupont Circle.  But it would be a hefty walk with kids.

Tysons is an EXPENSIVE shopping mall.  You are better off focusing on just seeing the sights of DC.  If they weren't doing extensive repairs on the metro I'd recommend booking a hotel at Tysons, perhaps the Sheraton Tower.  It is walking distance to the metro.  When are you coming to the area?  This week the silver line is being single tracked.  Later in the summer they'll be single tracking the red line which is the station at Dupont Circle.

Crystal City near Reagan National Airport, might be another good place to look for a hotel.  There are lots there and Crystal City is just a short ride into DC.  You are also near the Pentagon and Arlington Cemetery and not too far from Mount Vernon.

My dh once had to stay in hotel near his office when there was a blizzard and he couldn't get home.  I think it is called the Madera.  Is that one booked up?  Also there is another Palmera - they are Kimpton hotels my dh informs me so go to that site.  (I am just typing what he's telling me.)

Ask me any questions.  I"m going to bed but I'll respond in the a.m.

I'd look along the Red Line.

Days Inn in Van Ness

Embassy Suites in Friendship Heights

several choices by Downtown Bethesda (Doubletree, Hilton Garden, Hyatt)

something near the metro.

I'd have concerns about SafeTrack (metro work that is currently screwing up the VA lines) and a commute to Tyson's.

Aww, I used to live and work in the Dupont Circle area years ago, when I was first married.  :)  I don't really remember hotels though and they've probably all changed!  Maybe check out airbnb?

I vote to stay in Alexandria, put DH on the metro, then take the kids to Mt Vernon for the day. It's supposed to rain tomorrow, so you'll have the place to yourself. Buy some umbrellas/ponchos and dash from building to building. Walking the mall in rain might be less fun since it's so spread out.

I agree that Crystal City is a good place to look. We've stayed in Rosslyn, just across the river too. I'd definitely look for something on a Metro line, but I'm not familiar with any current/ongoing repairs.

Fwiw, we loved Tysons Corner mall. There are some fancier stores but some regular stores too. Last year, I bought a top there for $15, and it wasn't on clearance or anything. A lot of FUN stores to visit, if you're coming from an area with less than stellar shopping.

Have FUN!!!!!!
