What kind of shortcuts have you found to achieving some of the goals without money?

For me I know one thing I listed was a cleaner but when I'm focused I can get us all to do it together pretty efficiently. For travel options we have played tag along with dh's work and done all the educational stuff. I have an amazing library system that really does have all the books so I don't need to buy them. The storage and sorting is still an issue but I do have friends who are good at this stuff who make suggestions. If I listened to them ...

Really I could achieve so much more of what I want if I just had more time. Time is the more precious resource I think.

Dictation and talking about dictation could take the place of a lot of what we do here for LA.

And it does, in cycles.

I just get so talked-out on the science front, so workbook LA is extremely appealing.

We watch travel shows. It keeps alive the memories of the places we do travel and motivates us to save money so we can. I've considered advertising piano lessons or tutoring in exchange for help with my housecleaning. Dh won't let me do it. He says the house is my"job". Apparently years of study are only good for dusting and mopping.

That is very annoying.  If it is your job, why should he get to micromanage how you do it?

I would trade cleaning for piano lessons in a heartbeat.  UNfortunatly our piano teacher's house is always immaculate, right down to seasonal flowers.

There are no shortcuts to travel :(

I guess we ride the bus around town a lot.

I think you can scratch the travel itch a little bit without actual travel.

Visit the landmarks in your area (get a travel guide and see your town through fresh eyes!)

Visit ethnic restaurants and groceries in your area

Cook ethnic cuisine at home

Visit a cultural festival in your area (Oktoberfest, Swedish Midsummer)

Watch nature shows and travel shows on TV

Watch foreign films (maybe while munching on ethnic snacks and candies)

Learn a language

Recreate some international experience at home (Japanese tea ceremony, Chinese New Year, etc.)

Visit a botanical garden or zoo

I'm sure it depends on why travel calls to you.  None of these things is going to recreate the experience of hiking in the Alps or seeing the Grand Canyon.  But to me one of the biggest things that interests me about travel is the unique ways of life all over the world.  And yeah, that's also going to be better in person, but if recreating the experience locally is your only option, it isn't a bad one.  :-)

Mostly by being flexible about the schedule.

Oh, there's a big Egyptian exhibit 50 miles away with 15 foot statues of Hatshepsut that have never been outside of Egypt before, and were reconstructed after having been broken up and thrown onto a rubbish heap literally several thousand years ago?  We'll skip school tomorrow and head up there, and make up the crucial math lesson on Saturday.  Saves us a trip to Egypt.

And secondarily by using local resources whereever we are.

There's a gold rush fort near your great-uncle's house where we are headed for Thanksgiving dinner?  We'll make another trip up that way and stay with him and visit that fort.  We'll talk about forts and mines through the ages on the way to and from.

Sadly, there are not. My hope is that I'm making the right financial decisions now in order to make travel a priority when our youngest is 7 or 8. Seeing as youngest will be born in January that give me a good 9 years to plan way ahead. But travel is so important to me I need to make it happen.
