Susan Wise Bauer Posted June 15, 2016 Posted June 15, 2016 Dear Forum Folk, For years, parents have been telling me that they’d rather tackle meaty academic subjects (both for their own self-improvement and to make them better teachers) than sit through more conference workshops on family dynamics, modesty, and bread-baking. So I’ve been working with the Well-Trained Mind Academy Dean, Julia Kaziewicz, to build the Well-Educated Mind Academy, where we will offer live, online courses for adult learners. WEM Academy courses are designed to challenge and satisfy the intellectual curiosity of mature life-long learners. Taught by highly qualified and experienced instructors, our seminars provide home-educating parents (and all other interested adult students) with a rare opportunity to develop writing, reading, thinking, and Socratic discussion skills across a range of subjects. Check out the course descriptions and class schedules by visiting our website: http://www.wtmacademy.com/wema-about-us/ Please note: These courses are for you, not your kids. You have to be a grown-up to enroll. I hope you appreciate that. ENJOY. SWB Quote
Caraway Posted June 15, 2016 Posted June 15, 2016 I have been so impressed with the WTMA. Many thanks for a fantastic place to learn. Quote

Jane Elliot Posted June 16, 2016 Posted June 16, 2016 (edited) This looks fantastic! Can you point me to an explanation of the differences between ILM (recorded) and live classes? eta: Never mind. I found it. It's here, in case anyone else is interested. Edited June 16, 2016 by Jane Elliot 1 Quote
daijobu Posted June 21, 2016 Posted June 21, 2016 I'm happy to see the class for adults on how to teach math. I'll be giving a seminar on the topic at our local conference, and I will definitely refer parents here. Quote
Colleen in NS Posted June 23, 2016 Posted June 23, 2016 WOW!!! I may just take the math-teaching course! I have been tutoring for pay again over the past couple of years, in reading/spelling/composition. I've had parents ask me if I teach math, but I say "no" because I would have been lost without a math curriculum/teacher manual for my own kids. This course description and required texts make me think it's possible for me to learn basic math teaching principles!!!! Total resume booster for me! Quote
Colleen in NS Posted June 23, 2016 Posted June 23, 2016 (edited) Participants who take Well-Educated Mind Academy courses have the opportunity to earn a certificate in General Education and Pedagogy... Very shortly, we will be able to offer this certificate as an approved veteran further education option... nevermind; I think I figured out part of the answer anyway. Camy-7 boybarians 1 lady Posted July 12, 2016 Posted July 12, 2016 All the ladies in "da house" who have been homeschooling since the 80's and 90's are spitting and choking on their coffee after reading this quote from SWB's post: "For years, parents have been telling me that they’d rather tackle meaty academic subjects (both for their own self-improvement and to make them better teachers) than sit through more conference workshops on family dynamics, modesty, and bread-baking." BWAHAHAHHA! I might pass out if I have to sit on another "character training curriculum" informational session. Quote
Alicia Posted August 8, 2016 Posted August 8, 2016 Hello, I have registered for and received the text for the Teaching Math course. I wondered if there would be a follow up to the class? 3 of 9 chapters are covered and books 3A-5A but none of the Part B's of 3-5 books. I have my last to teach and feel that I have the time and mental space to do well with this science and math loving girl. Thank you, Alicia Quote
