what are some of your must-dos in banff?  points for being cheap or free.  we will probably do the gondola - dh is excited at the prospect of whitewater rafting (he's welcome.  I'd rather go horseback riding.)

we'll be there for a week - not including travel.

Will you drive out to Lake Louise? And the Columbia ice field?

I liked the hoodoos (but many people think they're kind of boring)

The hotsprings are fun. I might be biased because we always camped & getting into the hot springs was a welcome relief from being wet & cold LOL

Cave & Basin park is small but it was Canada's first national park & the cave is neat though not really spectacularly big or anything.  It's cheap though.

I'm inclined towards the ice field - just need to get more informaiton for logistics.

the hot springs are a mandatory.  2ds doesn't care about anything but, and  . . dudeling will like it.

what are hoodoos?

Definitely the hot springs. I'm more of a relaxer than a do-er in Banff.  I like walking along the main drag.  I enjoyed the museum.

If you're not staying at the Banff Springs Hotel (I'd recommend staying there) then at least get up to the hotel and go walk around inside it.  If you are staying, they do a historical tour for guests.  I love the Banff Springs Hotel.

If you are minding your budget there are a few affordable places to eat (not many) -- I recommend "The Old Spagetti Factory" for a nice sit down meal at a price that's reasonable for anywhere, and rare for Banff. Other than that, think pizza, fast food, and groceries store 'take out'.

It's been twenty years since I was there, but the hike to the tea house at Lake Louise was beautiful, and not too difficult.

I looked it up.  the tea house at lake agnes - sounds wonderful.  and lunch halfway.  ;p  led me to a great site for finding hikes.

we are renting a condo - so we have a full kitchen, and a (gas) bbq.  eating out will be more  a matter of "we're __, we need to eat".

Moraine lake is beyond belief for scenic spots.

I saw that . . and a nice easy hike to boot (to keep dudeling happy as we drag him places.)
