Faithr
We are just beginning our master bathroom reno. Part of the renovation is reconfiguring the 'dressing area' and master closet. We are looking at places like California Closet, etc. Though we think we just might go with organizing systems like at the Container Store. Dh and I are making a list of the things we'd like our master closet to hold. So are we've got: shoe shelves, hamper, places to hang shorter stuff (like jackets, shirts), places for longer things, a place for luggage, a place for linens and awkward stuff like the bed tray, a place for the vacuum cleaner, a full length mirror on the door, a place to keep extra pillows. What else? I've never designed a closet before!
gardenmom5
I have elfa from the container store in the master bedroom, and dh's office closet. (I did Rubbermaid - they're compatible with elfa - and another brand in children's rooms. both will eventually be converted to elfa.) we've been very happy with it. I don't have a walk-in closet - but when I was done, I got rid of a chest of drawers in my room. oh - I have one of their hanging basket/shelves on the back of my pantry closet. it's a narrow door - and it was the only thing like it that was narrow enough for the door. container store puts elfa shelving on sale in the summer, and all elfa goes on sale in dec.- january. I did a 10' section of my garage wall for hanging garden tools. I love it. It sounds like you have a huge closet. I would include some wall space you can hang long necklaces, scarves, etc. I've seen some great ideas - but I don't have a back wall on which to hang things.
gardenmom5
I would also take advantage of the design services by the manufacturers. if you are doing a more tailored plan - go into the store, and not the online service as those are much more generic.. make a list of everything in your closet, and what you want to put into your closet
zoobie
We put Elfa in all of ours during one of the big sales. Love it. California Closets is lovely but was much more expensive. I couldn't justify the cost difference for the utility for us. I'm in the closet less than a minute a day.
Faithr
The closet is pretty big but then again not as big as some of those you see on HGTV. I think it is a really ridiculous design because there was all this wasted space in the middle of it, but just a hanging bar and a shelf going around the periphery. It is rather square shaped. We are changing it and putting the sink in a different spot (sink is in the also ridiculously shaped and too big dressing area) and making the closet a long narrow one so there is no wasted space in the middle. I don't know if that makes sense. We have a Container Store near us so we plan to go in and work with them directly. I am glad to hear elfa gets good reviews. I can't justify the expense of California closet stuff. Seems over the top and status symbol-ish instead of truly practical. Around here though (Northern VA) everybody is always thinking in terms of resale value and I guess that affects our thinking too. But I still think going with elfa will be what we wind up doing. (though I have seen small washer/dryer combos) I think cabinet doors on closet storage is odd. (yeah - CC is pricey.) I like the platinum - I can add wood accents later, and the wood drawer holders do allow for more drawer depth options - but the drawers are smaller. at places - you will want standards NEXT TO each other. that allows more flexibility for spacing of shelves and drawers with the brackets. v

Why do you have a sink in your closet? Is your bathroom in there too? I wonder if the space in the middle can be used for adding an island of drawers or a sitting area where you put your shoes and socks on. We have a long closet but kind of a his and hers side. We made a mistake of splitting the "his" side with top and bottom rods to fit shirts, and then the "hers" side only has a tall rod to hang long things. So what has happened now is "he" has all of his shirts on his side, and "she" has all of her blouses, shirts, dresses, pants, etc. plus "his" pants too. I now want only my clothes on my side! So however you do it, make sure you design an exclusive his side and her side. It makes getting dressed easier if you only have to go to your area of the closet. When we added an addition to our house, we changed the location of our closet. We didn't know what we wanted so the contractor did his own design. We thought it was wonderful until after several years of using it. I think we'll eventually change it to an Elfa system.
