Timberly Posted June 8, 2016 Posted June 8, 2016 I don't know anything about cloud storage. I'd like to set up something for one kid's Microsoft 2013 Word and Excel documents and another kid's Macbook Pages and Numbers documents. I'd prefer them to only be able to access their own documents. What do you use? Helpful website to educate me? Trouble shooting tips? 1 Quote
hornblower Posted June 8, 2016 Posted June 8, 2016 Microsoft One Drive will probably be enough for you. 5 GB is free. if you have Windows 8.1 or 10 it's already on your machine. Otherwise just download the app from here: https://onedrive.live.com/about/en-ca/support/ 2 Quote
RenaInTexas Posted June 8, 2016 Posted June 8, 2016 Yep onedrive. But, in order to restrict access you'd have to: 1. Set up their own microsoft account (and thus email address). This would give them each their own onedrive account and thus they each get 5 GBs. 2. Otherwise, you can create them all a folder under your microsoft account. You would all share the 5 GBs. Then, on each of their devices, you would connect their device to only be able to open their folder....they wouldn't even see other folders. 2 Quote
Lanny Posted June 10, 2016 Posted June 10, 2016 I have been using a Free Dropbox account, for approximately 8 or 10 years. Twice, it saved my rear. I had not one, but two Desktop (Tower) PCs destroyed, within 6 or 12 months. One by a nearby Lightning strike and the other by an electrical jolt that I think came in on the phone line. My latest backups were in the Cloud, in my Dropbox account, both times. I was able to migrate to another computer and not lose any data. Now, we have an External USB SATA hard disk drive, that I use to make "System Image" backups of the hard drives. As I write this, it is finishing that task, on one of our boxes. If I had to replace a Hard Disk Drive in that box, with my latest "System Image" backup, I could restore to the time that backup had been made. I am *religious* about backing up my Data files to my DropBox account. I think the Free Dropbox account allows one 2 (?) GB of space, but a couple of people I sent invitations to signed up for Dropbox accounts and now I think I have about 3 (?) GB of space. There are other Free storage solutions available (Google Drive, Microsoft, etc.) but I have no experience with them, so I cannot comment on them. One should have: (a) an off site backup (in the cloud or somewhere away from your home or office) and (b) a local backup (external USB hard disk drive, etc.) 1 Quote
