Hilltopmom
Just wondering if anyone's kids have taken Intro to Public Speaking as DE CC students? I know all colleges have different requirements & syllabuses (I googled a bunch) but curious about others experiences:) It's not a class I took, as we were required to take a separate public speaking type class for Bio majors specifically. Ds is looking at taking it in the fall. Thanks.
Dmmetler
My one concern is that I know when I took it as an undergrad, some of the speech topics were pretty personal, especially during the persuasive speaking component. In mine, that included a kid speaking out for helmet use by motorcycle riders by recounting his brother's head injury and recovery thereof, a girl speaking out in favor of abortion by recounting her experience with pregnancy after being abused, and similar topics. There were also a lot of political-type speeches, which tended to turn into arguments in the questions sections, and I imagine next fall will REALLY bring that out of the woodwork. So just make sure your DS is prepared for it to potentially involve controversial or more adult content at times.
quark
Mine hasn't but his best friend did and it turned out to be a great class for him according to the mom. I think it's very hard to say what it will be like. It's not just about the syllabus but more to do with the instructor and fellow classmates. This instructor was very focused about the skills she wanted to impart and I think my son's friend was fortunate...a good number of his classmates were there to learn. Plus, the instructor was very good about engaging everyone. Definitely look at the Rate My Professor feedback.
Lori D.
Not as dual enrollment, but DS#2 took a Public Communications course that was required as part of the AAS he was working towards. Each student had to give several presentations over the semester, each with different requirements or as different types of speeches/presentation. I do recall that one required DS to bring in a power point or slideshow element on a thumb drive and use the slideshow as part of his presentation. The course was not difficult, and a high school student could definitely have handled it. DS said it was a piece of cake after the public speaking practices of various types he did in high school. I would think that there is the possibility that an introverted or nervous high school student might feel an even greater amount of pressure and anxiety in public speaking before a class of peers who are all adult strangers, in contrast to a class of similar-aged homeschooling friends… Just a thought! The main concerns for a dual enrollment student are those already mentioned by dmmetler (potentially adult topics by the adult college students), and quark (quality of class will greatly depend on the instructor and the students). Good luck! :)
G5052
Mine took it this spring as a full-time student, and it was no biggie. They had to do a reading, a persuasive speech, a demonstration, and a group project with a video. There were tests on the particulars of each type of speech, but they were easy. DS said it was easier than the local speech class he did in 9th grade. The professor was very strict on material and required pre-approval of each speech. He said there was nothing adult or offensive at all.
Hilltopmom
He's done a good amount of public speaking for Robotics this past year, but mainly of the "this is what we do, please donate to our cause" type at local groups (Rotary clubs, etc). He missed our homeschool group public speaking classes this year because of Robotics conflicts, ironically. Thinking public speaking class would be good for life in general & would be past of his English credit for the year. No real concerns about touchy adult subjects, he's pretty well- read, likely has already encountered it all. He likes controversy when it comes to writing essays, I think he might really like the "persuasive" speeches:) Thanks all! Now to just decide if it will be too much work on top of the rest of his schedule...
