June SAT takers

Recommended Posts

How did it go today ? Ds feels good about. It. He thought it was easier than the first practice test, but he has been working on Kahn Academy.

July 21st results-ugh!

Good luck to all who took the test and are now waiting for results.

DS only took a subject test but I was similarly appalled that results will only be known on July 21! Previously, it was just a 3-week wait!

Dd took Latin, finished it rather quickly, went over one time, and waited for the hour mark. She lost her way out and found someone to lead her to the exit. She claims it's easier than Lukeion exams.

Darn, not good.

Why not good?

I am trying to consol myself that it was six weeks when I took them. Presently I am waiting on ITBS test--taking forever --, an AP score and now the SATs. Thank goodness my blood test results were in today! Ds is as laid back as can be and has probably forgotten he is getting any results ever. Lol

It was disorganised at the high school where my oldest is taking it. Kids were hunting for the correct room to go to as there are no signs. No instructions on where to wait for kids and also no instructions on when to pick up. This kid had taken the ACT and he is very independent so I am less worried than if it was youngest taking.

Now I am reading the forums while having an hour more to wait before he is done with SAT w/o essay assuming they start at 8:30am.

I think we will try to pick dates where my local high school hosts the tests next time. They ran a tight ship.

We went to the wrong door. I am learning to expect logistical mistakes. I dropped him

Off with his best friend, whose already tested there twice and I saw another friend and an acquaintance walking toward the school. I think it helped him to

Have familiar faces.

Hope blood test was okay!

Like yours, mine is just happy it's done and he can have a proper month of summer before he heads to a summer program. The hard part is he will be away till mid August so although his results are out July 21, *I* have to wait till mid August! Aaargh. Unless he won't mind me logging in to his account, hmmm, must remember to bribe kid before he leaves. :D

DS took the chemistry subject test this morning.

I saw the two lines for the SAT with and without essay. Is it better to take it with the essay every time, just in case you need it?

It seems to be falling out of favor. Since Ds is just ending his sophomore year, I decided he should wait. If it looks like he might need it, we'll try to leave time to test twice. He's takimg AP English Lang. Next year which should only help. So I guessmy answer depends on how early you start testing.

One school he's interested in only uses it for placement so, if he needs it, I'll have him do it spring senior year. See how little credence I put I the results?

Invoke counselor privledge!

Blood test were fine. Thanks. My A1c was back down which made me happy (last time it was up despite having been working out regularly--way to discourage me!)

This test doesn't have to count for her, but the fact she rushes through exams can be a problem. She went through some parts of the Excell book (not sure the exact name) which is really difficult, something that requires at least Latin 3.

Ahh . Yes, I understand. Ds tends to rush through and think he does fine, too, even when he doesn't .i think/ hope he's growing out of it--which is one if the reasons I want the test results sooner!

Mine finished at 12 noon and waited patiently outside the classroom. We had to call and wave him over since we were not allowed in that area.

They started at 9am and they checked all the talent search kids for ID even though it is not required. He has his passport with him since ACT did the same thing.

We went to UPS to get the form notarized for ID purposes. The kids had seats assigned today, so no random seating arrangement. We were there by 730 but doors weren't open until 810 and the test started at 856.

They were assigns for Ds, too. He just told me that he found the reading passages interesting. Huh! That was unexpected .

The assigned seat thing was stated on the admission ticket so I told DS to wait to be seated. Kid was happy to be done so we'll see how he does. My boys are busy with classes in summer so they couldn't care less when results will be out. My other boy is taking ACT next week which does not have assigned seating, and it would be at a different high school :)

ETA:

It is blazing hot today but the test site was windy so not as bad.

My dd had assigned seating too.  I must have missed that on the admission ticket, but it was fine.  My only concern was that dd would be seated somewhere she could see the clock in the room, and she was.

She said she finished every section early and even had time to re-check most of her answers.  But then she said she only skimmed the first passage initially, and the second time she went back, she re-read it carefully and found she had to change some of her answers. :glare:  Good learning experience.  She also said she expected it to be harder than the practice test she took on Khan, but she didn't feel that it was.

The only slightly strange thing that happened to her was that she was not placed in the correct room alphabetically.  When she checked in to what appeared to be the correct room, they told her that they did not have her name on their list and she had to go back to the front of the school and talk to Mr. So and So who was apparently in charge.  She did and found he had grouped her, and all the other kids who were 8th grade and under, in the room with the high school kids at the end of the alphabet (My dds last name does not fall at the end of the alphabet).  Weird.  I have no idea why this was done -- when my older dd took it in 6th grade, they didn't do this.  It didn't seem to serve any purpose other than to make her feel stressed out right at the beginning of the day because she thought there was a big problem when the correct room didn't have her name, and then she thought she might be late getting to the room where she was assigned.   Maybe they thought the younger kids would feel better grouped together?  But there were only 3 of them in a room full of about 30 kids.  Goofy.

All worked out fine in the end.

Both of my dc took subject tests yesterday. Older ds took world history and physics, while younger ds took biology. DH did the registration for them, and he registered older ds at the local public high school, but he was unable to do the same for younger ds - he got an error message saying there were no slots available. So younger ds was registered in the neighboring town. This made yesterday morning slightly more complicated since dc needed to go in opposite directions.

So afterwards I asked older ds how many kids were taking subject tests. There were two total (including ds). Apparently they waited a bit for a third student, but the third student never showed. In the end though, I'm glad it worked out this way. Older ds said that he and the other student both finished their first test quickly, and the proctor let them start their second test when they were both done with the first. I think it might have stressed younger ds if he thought he was being slow.

My third child took the SAT(without the essay) yesterday in the Memphis area.  He loved it!  Said it might not ever take the ACT again, if he could take the new SAT.  He is math guy though, and finished early on the math test. Thank you Derek Owens!!

(Wish I could say the same about the reading, but he is S...L.....O...W.....in reading.

He got to sit where he wanted to .....No assigned seating....He loved that.  He had two breaks. He loved that.

The room was a touch cool, which he liked.  Said it kept him sharp and alert.

All in all it was a good experience!

Have any of you heard the chatter that one version of the test was an exact replica of one of the tests just given in March (2016)?  I read this on the college confidential boards and also on reddit.  Erica at The Critical Reader also took note of this in her blog post from yesterday.  It will be interesting to see if this gets any publicity.  I know the college board re-uses old tests but to re-use a test given just 3 months ago???  If this is true, it doesn't strike me as particularly well-played on the part of the College Board.

I don't think they will cancel scores unless they find there was cheating.  My concern would be that the curve is going to favor those who took the same exam in March and punish the rest.

Doesn't the fact that the Chinese tutoring companies had copies mean there was cheating, though? I agree about the curve. Ds feels really good about the test. He does have lots of time, but it would be a shame if something happens. I don't think there are enough kids who take the tests that close together to disturb the curve, though. Particularly b/c there were multiple versions, so fewer would have gotten both tests, right? But, I could be wrong.

The Chinese had copies prior to the March exam and I believe some scores for March were cancelled because of it. This time, I doubt anyone could have predicted the CB would reuse one of those tests so soon, so I'm not sure they could prove cheating was done. It begs the question: why would CB even give that test for June knowing it was so widely circulated recently not only in Asia but over the Internet?

Indeed. I get what you are saying, though. That makes me feel better.

I bet they didn't mean to, if they did.  Don't you think this was probably a mistake?  It seems too soon to reuse the exact same test.

  • 1 month later...

Results are out. I can see DS11's results through his talent search account.

ETA:

Reading score was lower than score on Khan's practice test one. Math was same as score on Khan's practice test one.

ETA:

I'm just happy we don't need to wait until midnight even though we are a family of night owls.

Still waiting here... One more day. I'm probably going to get them before my 16 yo does too - I managed to log on 1 min faster to find out her AP scores when they came out. And I always get up earlier!

It would be nice if this were the last time she takes it. She's pretty tired of the SAT.

How do I check it if we weren't allowed to register online? Snail mail?

Is this for someone who was not yet 13?  If so, you should be able to call tomorrow and get the score over the phone, if you get someone who's nice.  We were able to do that when my dd was 12.  Otherwise, the scores are mailed out.

Okay, thanks, I'll call tomorrow, kind of nerve wracking I would think to hear the score over the phone, but I think Dd has reached a point where she can't stand the wait any longer.

You can call at 6am PST. The phone lines are open from 9am EST.

We had to call them for admission ticket issue.

I dreamed about DS's scores last night. The first dream revealed a respectable score and then I woke with a start and was sad it was a dream. Then I dreamed he was checking scores again and this time the score was about a 100 points less and I woke with a start and was so happy it was a dream.

Hope your son gets the scores he wants :)

My hubby was so excited yesterday he read all the concordance tables and forward me the links. Need to call CB later to keep the score just in case.

I'll be panicking when it is the SAT subject tests but that would be in Aug 2017, unless kid wants to try math in June.
