We live in the desert, it's been in the 100's all week. Today it's 106 and it's only noon.

My husband is Nordic and my daughters take after him; they're extremely fair. I don't like to take them out often during the day during these hot weather months, for fear of dehydration and sun stroke. I'm trying to plan out the next 17 weeks and fill them with a lot of fun activities that can be done at home.

So far, I've come up with an indoor kitchen garden, building a solar oven, a monthly Tinkercrate subscription, writing letters, art journaling, going to the Philharmonic, museum days, and movie days.

I'd like them to have something to look forward to each week and at this point, I'm trying to think of less expensive options. Any suggestions?

TIA!

Are you near any state/national parks with caves or otherwise very shaded activity. If you are I'd suggest getting a pass. Ds and I visited caves in NM a few years back and it was pretty fun for us.

I like to keep physical activity up so I'd try to find the cheapest option for inside exercise with passes and discounts (indoor pool, trampoline place, something where you can burn energy for an hour or two a few days a week. If I bought a pass I'd make it a point to go all the time).

How old?

We had this great art book when my kids where younger. It had art projects that followed the styles through history. You could get something like that and do a couple projects a week and plan on looking up some of the artist when you visit the museum.

google Kids Bowl Free

They have free bowling (2 games per day) all summer long for kids at participating bowling places.  You can buy an adult pass too which is a very good deal.  Only have to pay for shoes if you need to rent shoes.

They are 10 and 11 and enjoy science, reading, building stuff, Legos, and LED and electronics projects with Daddy.

My 10 year old loves fashion design, cooking, writing fiction, and math.
My 11 year old loves creating art, crocheting, reading, and "Pride and Prejudice" (the book and the 2006 movie).

Check your local library for various summer activities they have going on. Ours have movie days or evenings, preteen/teen events/activities, crafts, etc....

I would school through the summer and take a break when your family can enjoy the outdoors.

We school all year round, but I wanted to add some extra activities during the hot months when we can't regularly go out.

Toy ideas, like creating toys, or buying mass-produced toys?

We do love projects here.

Get outside in the early morning and/or evening. Doesn't the desert cool off quite a bit when the sun goes down? I remember seeing well-lit tennis courts outside of Phoenix. People just pushed the button to turn on the lights, and they could play anytime. Swimming inside or out is nice when it's hot.

We don't actually have any lanes for Kids Bowl Free close enough to us to be practical, unfortunately.

Check your local bowling alley for deals. We don't have Kids Bowl Free at ours, but we DO have where you pay a one time fee per person of $35ish dollars which pays for 3 games per day, INCLUDING shoes from Memorial Day though Labor Day. It's a better deal than renting shoes at $4+ per day to "bowl free".

I was thinking of project type toys. Raspberry Pi, snap circuits, little bits. We have gobs of those types that are fun.

DS is 12 and a project boy. He has a book called Every Trick in the Book that's full of fun projects.

Sometimes the King of Random on YouTube is fun for how to projects.
