Lb20inblue Posted June 2, 2016 Posted June 2, 2016 I was wondering if anyone has found or used any elocution resources for children. My children ( 6 yr olds) are developing a strong Midwestern accent and we would like to help them overcome the accent. Thanks! Quote
Tsuga Posted June 5, 2016 Posted June 5, 2016 What dialect were you hoping for? That might make a difference. You're fighting nature here, so I have to say it's going to be an uphill battle. Quote
SporkUK Posted June 5, 2016 Posted June 5, 2016 The only elocution like thing I've used is Super Star Speech which is for articulation more than dialect though some dialects have different articulations. The mishmash accent my kids have [neither my partner or I are local to where we now live] all seems to include th-fronting [replacing th sounds with other fricatives] and for one to replace /t/ with /d/ a lot which used to drive me nuts and causes some issues with spelling and reading. The activities in Super Star Speech made them more aware of the sounds in some words, and I still sometime use the ideas in Super Star Speech as warm up games for phonics and spelling lessons, but it hasn't really changed anything. It is an uphill battle and not a hill I want to die on. My late BIL was to switch between the local and the accent my MIL prefers very easily, but neither I or my partner have that kind of talent and our kids don't seem to have picked up being able to change or hear accent differences easily either. My 11 year old has previously been upset with people saying/arguing with him that he isn't from here because of how he he talks. The only advice I've had so far on that is to include more local audiobooks/media with the local accent which so far I haven't been able to do due to the area we live in not really making a lot of media and a lot of differences in accents in a small space that others can hear but I can't. If you're looking to bring in a more common accent you may find that kind of addition easier. Quote
