Any "experts" on Maya Angelou?

I have question about her life story. I don't know much about her and have not read any of her works. I thought someone here might know more about her. I tried googling but did not find much.

 

Anyway, does anyone know about her grandmother- specifically what she did for a living? My understanding was that she owned her own store and never worked as a maid. Is this true?

I'm not an expert, but I know I've listened to various interviews on NPR where Angelou talked about her childhood and her grandmother. This post has some information you might find helpful.

Not an expert but it is my understanding that Maya Angelou's grandparents (the ones she lived with at different points in her childhood) owned a small store which was on a farm that they owned in Arkansas. I don't know if her grandmother ever worked as a maid.

I read her autobiography a few years ago:  I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings.  I really don't remember the details, but her life was pretty incredible.  I'd recommend you read the book.   She was a very remarkable woman!  (Just checked Wiki, and it does say that her grandmother owned a general store.)

Thank you everyone for the responses. I think I am going to have to break down and read her autobiography. I was told a story about her and her grandmother by someone who knew them and wanted to verify it.
