MaeFlowers
I have question about her life story. I don't know much about her and have not read any of her works. I thought someone here might know more about her. I tried googling but did not find much. Anyway, does anyone know about her grandmother- specifically what she did for a living? My understanding was that she owned her own store and never worked as a maid. Is this true?
Teachaheart
I'm not an expert, but I know I've listened to various interviews on NPR where Angelou talked about her childhood and her grandmother. This post has some information you might find helpful. http://www.npr.org/2008/04/06/89355359/at-80-maya-angelou-reflects-on-a-glorious-life
LucyStoner
Not an expert but it is my understanding that Maya Angelou's grandparents (the ones she lived with at different points in her childhood) owned a small store which was on a farm that they owned in Arkansas. I don't know if her grandmother ever worked as a maid. Edited June 1, 2016 by LucyStoner
J-rap
I read her autobiography a few years ago: I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. I really don't remember the details, but her life was pretty incredible. I'd recommend you read the book. She was a very remarkable woman! (Just checked Wiki, and it does say that her grandmother owned a general store.) MaeFlowers
Thank you everyone for the responses. I think I am going to have to break down and read her autobiography. I was told a story about her and her grandmother by someone who knew them and wanted to verify it.
