suzziesnowflake Posted June 1, 2016 Posted June 1, 2016 My son who has dyslexia and dysgraphia will be a 12th grader this coming year. I am lost at what to do for English. His plans are to go into a trade and not into college. This year he read a few books and wrote short papers about them, learned how to fill out a job application, created a resume, and studied some short stories. He can write different types of paragraphs (although they are not 12th grade level) . His proof reading is poor due to his difficulty with spelling . This coming year has stumped me. I don't know if we should do more of the same or how to handle this. Does anyone have any recommendation for what they used for a child in a similar situation? Quote
PeterPan Posted June 1, 2016 Posted June 1, 2016 What you've done so far sounds really good! You could do public speaking this year and count it for english. If you're labeling everything as english 9, 10, 11, 12 on the transcript, just do it as english 12 with a public speaking emphasis, kwim? Quote
suzziesnowflake Posted June 2, 2016 Author Posted June 2, 2016 OhElizabeth I never thought about adding speech! We are going to continue on working on resumes and applications. Can you think of any other real life writing he may need? Heathersmom: Yes he does type his work. His spelling is awful! He can butcher a word so bad that spell check doesn't work for him very well. Heathermomster Posted June 2, 2016 Posted June 2, 2016 Since you know that your DS will be taking the tech route, maybe explore what the certificate requirements are for his chosen program and then gear his studies in that direction. DS took informal logic in 9th grade and that course positively affected his writing. As far as spelling, there is a program called Ginger that has a free download and works with Word. Maybe try Ginger and see what happens. Since he is a rising senior, I think I would be getting any np testing lined up so that he can apply for academic accommodations at tech school. He may be able to DE now. Quote
