Favorite picturebooks to go along with Story of the USA

I would like to put together a summer American History program using Story of the USA (Book 1 :Explorers and Settlers) as a spine.  I already have the book, so would like to make use of it.

What are your family picture books from this era?    Has anyone successfully paired literature with this spine?
