mom31257
If you have some good resources for these topics, would you please share? Any suggestions or tips if you've done something like this would be great, too! Our homeschool group is going to have a once-a-month Spanish meeting for a group of 8th-11th graders using the same curriculum at home. Some of us were talking about how many of the traditional math programs don't include as much statistics or probability as Common Core does, so we were thinking of doing some activities the same day. Thanks for any tips or resources you have! Edited May 25, 2016 by mom31257
Brad S
The Practice of Statistics book by Starnes, Yates, and Moore is excellent. The 4th or earlier editions would be less expensive. While it is a textbook often used for AP Statistics classes, it starts at a pretty basic level and has a lot of very relevant problems and exercises. Many or most middle school and high school math books used in schools in the past 20 years include basic probability and statistics, which is a very good trend. Most of the chapters in books I've seen are actually pretty good, often better than the rest of the book on pre-algebra, algebra, or geometry IMO. But they're more of an introduction and tend to have a textbook-like feel; Starnes, Yates, and Moore has a lot more depth, a lot of relevance to every day issues, and would provide a nice reference after your coop is done.
Kathy in Richmond
I'm not sure what age group you have in mind, but I'd suggest Chances Are: Making Probability & Statistics Fun to Learn and Easy to Teach as a source that can cover a range of ages in a group setting. mom31257
I'm not sure what age group you have in mind, but I'd suggest Chances Are: Making Probability & Statistics Fun to Learn and Easy to Teach as a source that can cover a range of ages in a group setting. Thank you! The group will be 8th-11th graders doing Spanish 1 together. I'm thinking why not take advantage of the time out and add something to it.
