tell me the advantage of having one in your yard?

 

dudeling saw it last night while I was working outside. it seemed to have something in it's mouth, and took off running when it  saw I saw it. (I confess, I was squirting it with the hose. I didn't get a good look - it was very small - and I thought it was something else.  (we've had moles  . . )

last place I saw it was in the bushes next to my house. . . . if it want's to eat critters, that's fine with me.

They eat things like moles, mice, voles, chipmunks. etc.  There is no downside to having one in your yard.

they eat rats & mice. My understanding is they're only a problem if you keep chickens because they'll try to raid your coop.

Yes, they're bad news for chickens.  They'll go through and just kill for the sake of killing them, several at a time.  Or that's what dd's said was periodically doing that to their chickens.

 

But if they're eating the rodents, that's great.  I'm surprised you saw it though.  They seemed to be very elusive little creatures.  :)

Weasels are pretty cool if you do not have poultry or fowl on the premises. I wish I had one now to take care of a mole.

Not the same thing, but I reread Rikki Tikki Tavi this morning. If you had a mongoose it could kill cobras for you. Maybe a weasel is similar?
