IngramC Posted May 24, 2016 Posted May 24, 2016 My husband and I are thinking of home schooling our boys who are going into 8th and 10th grade. I was wondering if anyone here started very late in the game and if they could give me any advice, especially on making the final decision to take the plunge. I have always been very active in their education even with them at public school. I have considered doing a modified version of home schooling with them utilizing the school for extra curricular classes and teaching core classes at home. Any thoughts on this? I appreciate anything. Quote
lmrich Posted May 24, 2016 Posted May 24, 2016 First check the rules and laws not only in your state but also in your school district. I have found that things change frequently and differ greatly. Quote
Insertcreativenamehere Posted May 25, 2016 Posted May 25, 2016 I'm in Minnesota, and our schools allows us to participate in up to 3 hours a day of classes at the public school and still be considered homeschoolers. We have only utilized this on a limited basis -- for classes like art and music -- but it has been a helpful option. Quote

And welcome! 1 Quote

I think that with students at those ages, whether or not they are "in" is going to make a huge difference. And welcome! This is exactly what I was going to post - how do they feel about it? I think being able to have the school as a resource is a big plus, because you won't be tied into the homeschool community yet (and, in some areas, homeschooling high schoolers are mighty thin on the ground). It also takes some pressure off of you. We've been at it since kindy, so I can't help much with the late start aspect from experience. What specific things are making you think about this now? Quote
Ravin Posted May 25, 2016 Posted May 25, 2016 Another ditto for "are the kids on board?" At those ages, they really need to be part of the decision making process, if not the main drivers of it. Quote
