Our current dog is the second one to use the dog bed we have.  She has torn the cover with her claws when she dreams.  Also, the insert absolutely stinks.  She loves to swim in the creek, and even though we wipe her down almost dry, the stink is unavoidable.  She is a long-haired golden retriever mix, so she's a big dog.

The bed she is using came from LLBean about 18 years ago.  I could get another one from them- I have coupon dollars that would help offset the cost, thankfully!  I would also consider others.  I would like a bed that has a washable cover and a waterproof/odorproof insert.  Our dog is about 80 pounds, and her bed is about 2'x3'....so rather large.

Would you all make suggestions for dog beds that I can research?  Keeping the cost down is a benefit, of course, but getting one that is of good quality that will last is too.

Thanks so much!

ETA:   The cover needs to be durable because of the hard dreaming our dog does.  Keeping our dog's nails trimmed is a must because the dreaming.  Our first dog had doggy dreams, but she never "ran" so hard in her sleep as this dog does!  It is unbelievable how active this dog is in her sleep.

Listening, no suggestions.

Our lab had a nice big bed with washable insert, but he/it stunk so bad. And then I tried to wash it and what a mess. Our two short hair dogs get beds that are a little smaller (no insert) and fit in my washer well, but our two long hair dogs don't currently have beds. I take that back, the lab does have a mat he lays on. I know he'd like a big fluffy one, but I've been hesitant to buy another one.

I have a Costco one right now that the dog and cats love. Probably not what you are looking for though.

I had LL bean dog beds forever. Orvis dog beds get really good reviews also.

I use a crib mattress as a bed when I have medium to large dogs.  The last one I had was used for 12+ years and was still in excellent shape and odor free when I gave it away (and it wasn't a particularly expensive crib mattress when I bought it -- probably mid-range).  It was a waterproof mattress but I also used a waterproof pad over it.  Sheets are inexpensive to buy and easy to change and wash.  You do need a bit of floor space, though.

I have two, my dog loves one of them and refused to sleep on the other so I gave it away.  He loves the oval shaped one with a raised ridge around the edge.  He hated the retangular (similar to a regular mattress) one that I spent big money on. He's a large collie.

We like our Molly Mutt covers and mesh insert for our pup.  We put old pillows inside the mesh insert and then wash as much as necessary.  We prefer this to commercial dog beds because the filling never gets compressed or weirdly shaped with washing.

The covers are made of sturdy canvas, but I confess she rips holes in them eventually.  Luckily, buying another cover is not as expensive as buying a whole new bed. I usually buy two covers -- one to use while the other is in the laundry.

I have a gazillion beds. We used to have 3 large dogs & now are down to 2 and they want beds in all the rooms.....

The one bed I don't yet have but I'm coveting is a Kuranda. https://kuranda.com/

One of the easiest, cheapest & best beds I have is the one that my old (sadly gone) newfie x Bear used the most but now is my setter's.

It consists of a king size foam mattress topper which I got on sale at a close-out place.

It's fairly thick (maybe 2 inches?) and the best thing is this: You fold it in half & it becomes a twin size. Then you get a twin size velour fitted sheet and slip it over that.

It lies at the foot of our bed. I actually have another layer under the fitted sheet - a thick old bedspread. Every 2 weeks covers go in the wash.

For the size & quality it can't be beat. I think the whole thing cost way less than $100 & it's lasted many years.

You are brilliant. Thank you!

I bought one similar to this for my spoiled lab.  Unfortunately she really doesn't like it.  She will use it when I make her to dry off after swimming in the pool, but given her choice she prefers one of the others.   Just an FYI.

yeah, this seems to be really hit & miss. It's very useful in shelters where it's either that or the cold cement floor but in a house with soft couches and rugs,

I can totally see how some dogs would not choose it.

I think one of mine might like it because I think it would be cooler but I'm not sure she'd enjoy getting out of it as she's quite arthritic now.

Oh & both of mine like the plastic big basket bed. I have a foam liner in there. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Extra-Large-Plastic-Sleeper-Italy/dp/B0094K8VT4

Tractor Supply has huge cheap dog beds a couple of times a year, if you have one of those near buy. They're usually $20. I buy six at a time. I keep three out at a time (one for each dog) and wash them until they get torn up. Then switch them out. At $20 each I'm not upset to throw them out a couple of times a year. I have a Doberman that "leaks" even on her medication sometimes so any bed with stuffing has to be washed pretty often. I need to steal the baby mattress the kids use as a jumping mat and requisition it as her bed. That's a great idea.
