Hello all,

My oldest son is going to be starting 9th grade next year, so I thought I'd say hi. I've been reading lots of the pinned topics as well as the ongoing threads. My "deer in the headlights" terror about high school may be abating ever so slightly.

We have always homeschooled, but this whole credits/grades/hours business will be new for me.

I am still trying to get my head around what we need to do for "English 9," but I'll ask my questions about that in another post. Thanks in advance for all of the knowledge that you all impart here, it's making this whole process seem a little bit more accessible :)

Welcome :) We are finishing our first year of high school. There were some bumps in the road and lessons learned, but we did it! You will, too and you will get tons of help here!

I was pretty terrified back in November when I really started trying to get a handle on high school.

Now I only get a quick shot of adrenaline from time to time when I think about 9th.  I did as you are doing: read, read, read all the posts about high school.  I've collected tons of info to sort through on various topics as they come up.

This summer is when I'll get a good handle on grading.  I have never assigned grades before and don't really understand what I need to do to come up with a grade.  I'll be starting a thread (or finding threads) about that, I'm sure.

Engish seems to include reading literature and writing about it.  There can be a few creative writing assignments thrown in, too.  There is often discussion about the books.  We're not doing any more formal grammar, though sometimes that is still needed in 9th grade for some kids.  I'll be using Analytical Grammar, High School Reinforcement which is just one worksheet every 2 weeks to keep the grammar fresh.

I'm using Lost Tools of Writing for the writing portion of English.  I've chosen 7 or 8 books to read from world authors this year since we're studying world history.

One in college, one going into 12th.

I was a wreck when the oldest was in 8th. Most of our friends were sending theirs off to the classroom the next fall, and it was SO intimidating to think of homeschooling high school.

Now it's not a biggie. I just bought my last set of homeschool books and supplies, and we're nearly done!

We're just starting 9th too- nice to know there's a group of us!

I'm a first timer, too!

My oldest went back to ps after 8th, and at the very last minute, so I've researched before, but didn't really pull the trigger.  And my rising 9th grader is a completely different child from ds, so the academic plan is all from scratch.

Welcome! High school really isn't that difficult, though it can seem overwhelming at first. I think it's easy to make it more complicated than it should be. Lori D has some fantastic posts on the basics of things like credits, so I highly recommend reading those.

The high school years are absolutely my favorite. :D

Welcome to the "big kid board". :)

We homeschooled all the way from grades 1 & 2, and I spent most of my older DS's 9th grade year doing this:  :willy_nilly: But with the help of the kind and generous ladies on these boards who had gone before us, we had some great high school years and graduated both from homeschool high school -- and our older DS just graduated from college!

Hope you will find answers to your questions here! Warmest regards, Lori D.

Welcome!  I have a DS going into 12th and a DD into 8th.  I don't post much, but would have lost my mind if not for the high school forum back when DS was starting 9th.  I clearly remember the moment after reading scores of threads when I thought, "You know, I think we can do this."  This place is such a blessing!
