My teenager son's neck is hurting so badly that he can barely hold his head up but he is refusing to go to the doctor.  What happened was a few weeks ago he was hit by a car while crossing the street.  Fortunately as the driver was making a right turn and saw him, he stopped the car almost immediately  but he did hit my son's knee and kind of pushed him a few feet across.  His knee hurt and he was shaken, and then his neck started hurting a few hours later and got worse over a few days but then it got somewhat better.  But he woke up this morning very sore.  Should I put my foot down and make him go to the doctor?  Can the doctor do anything for him?

If you don't want to go to the ER, you could call an ortho doctor.  Many of them have their own imaging equipment and can take care of that stuff there.  The ER will cost a lot more.  If they can't handle that there they will tell you to go to the ER.

ER. NOW. Not to scare you, but do you know Buster Keaton had a bad sore neck after one stunt in one of his silent films. Years later, a doctor asked him, reviewing x-rays, when he had broken his neck. OK, odds are your son did NOT break anything, but he still needs to be cleared by a doctor. If naught else, he may well have whiplash, and benefit from wearing a neck brace for a while. But he NEEDS to be seen. You are the parent. If the teen is 18 or above and pulling the "I am an adult" cr*p, well, is he totally independent yet? No? Then he needs to get in the car and let you do your job. Let us know how it goes - hope it is just whiplash. And hope he has the info of whoever hit him.

Just a thought - if he is a minor and you do not get him medical attention and he does have a bad injury, you could be in trouble!!!!! Just a thought.

That the neck hurt, then got better, but now hurts again is not a good sign.

I put my foot down and forced him to go to the urgent care clinic.  The doctor took x rays and said that there was nothing broken but that he was suffering neck spasms from being hit.  He said that even though the accident had happened three weeks ago, the spasms were obviously caused by the jar to the body and that I was right to bring him in today.  My son is back in bed and resting.

I regret not taking him to the ER right after the accident.  Like an idiot, I waved the driver on after my son was hit because it was not a serious hit.  But you just never know.

Yeah, the driver's insurance would have had to cover the ER bill.

Yep and brace yourself for them denying the claim first time around.  Anytime there is an accident the insurance company wants to know if someone else could be paying for it.

I hope your health insurance covers it, because they could argue it should be covered by the insurance of the offending driver. Glad it's just x-rays and an urgent care bill.

I had whiplash as a teenager - not a car accident, but it happened basically horseplaying around at school. I feel backwards very quickly.

Anyway... it got way worse before it got better. And it was just the same as what the OP described - at first I was okay, then slightly sore, then about a month later, I could barely rotate my neck. I managed to work through it, but then, a little less than a year after the original accident, I had a horrible relapse of it. It had never fully gotten better but I had learned to live with it and then suddenly, boom, I couldn't rotate my head again and I lost feeling in my arm as well and couldn't lift things. At that point, I finally had insurance for the first time and was able to see a doctor, who diagnosed it and told me it was basically whiplash, that I needed to go get massage and some light pt. The pt I couldn't afford at the time, but massage helped a little. However, I've learned that these injuries can recur over time. This is the best I feel like it's been in many years now and I really credit doing yoga regularly for helping me manage it. It hasn't bugged me in years now, which is a relief.

I am not trying to scold you, but if someone's moving vehicle came into contact and downed my kid, I'd make a police report simply for insurance purposes. If something came up later, there would be documentation.

And I'm glad your son's injury truly was nothing serious!
