sbgrace Posted May 18, 2016 Posted May 18, 2016 Is it depressing and/or unhelpful if a child is older? I am feeling kind of discouraged on the autism front lately, and my son is 12. Would those links be good to read for me? Quote
MomatHWTK Posted May 19, 2016 Author Posted May 19, 2016 I haven't read through them, the links were just provided by members of another forum I visit. On the discouragement front, you are probably at the "worst" point in terms of your child's development. Back when we were in the early teen transition another mom with an older child told me it would get better and she was right. I had to cling to that promise for about two years while I waited. ; ) My NT (or relatively NT) have each had a lot of emotional ups and downs starting at age 10. For my Aspie, it was really bad. He had the normal developmental hormone and brain growth spurt issues plus the ASD glitches. Now, at age 15 he has mellowed quite a bit. If you want to PM about our experience with medications I will share privately. 1 Quote
Mrs. Tharp Posted May 22, 2016 Posted May 22, 2016 Yes, I have heard that the middle school years can be especially rough--that anxiety and sensory issues often spike when puberty starts. We are entering into that period ourselves and it has been a roller coaster so far. Good to receive a reminder that it does get better. Quote
MomatHWTK Posted May 23, 2016 Author Posted May 23, 2016 This is a great explanation of sensory overload and other issues too: http://the-art-of-autism.com/understanding-the-spectrum-a-comic-strip-explanation/ 1 Quote
