Looking for more French movies/TV shows/etc for tween

So far, thanks in part to recommendations here (thanks!), DS has watched C'est pas sorcier (youtube), Chorus (love this one, have the soundtrack), Au Revoir Les Enfants and Haute Cuisine. We also have the Petit Nicolas on DVD but he told me he watched this approx 30 times in France ;))

There was a thread recently about this but a good amount of the ones recommended there were rated R.  we are fairly liberal here but I'm holding on to the PG 13 rating as long as I can. 

 

I know we can watch American movies in French but would prefer to exhaust the French content first. Any more recommendations for me? Many thanks!

It's a tough age for French films!  Have you seen Kirikou  et la Sorciere?  It's young, but enjoyable for older kids too. Nice soundtrack by Youssou N'Dour.  Other animated films are Ernest et Celestine and Une vie de chat. DS enjoyed all of these.

 

I think Jean de Florette is PG. I know the sequel,  Manon des Sources is.  Has he read the books (Pagnol)?

 

Oh, one that DS loves is Belle et Sebastien.  A very nice film. 

 

The classic Peau d'ane avec Catherine Deneuve...  Hmm, really tough to find good films for this age.  The only one I can remember from when I was little is La Boum, and it has been so long since I have seen it I can't remember if it would be age appropriate.

 

We watch all animated films in French. There are some that I am not even sure if they are originally in French or English. La-haut, for example. Brendan et le secret de Kells.  And Moi, moche et mechant,

 

Oh, how about Tatie Danielle? I think that is PG.  Oh, and Didier. That should be okay.  And Toto le heros.

Kerity (5+)

Le renard et l'enfant (tous)

Loulou de Montmartre (tous but we think it should be 6+)

Belle et Bete (not Disney, rated 9+ here)

 

Cyrano de Bergerac with Gerard Depardieu (rated 12+, but dd saw it at 11)

Maybe a little young but both of mine enjoy Wakfu on Netflix.  It's a cartoon series, almost anime style.

Say, how about Le grand bleu? It's been years since I've seen it, but I think my friend and I saw it about a hundred times! I don't know what it is rated, but I think it is okay for kids.

 

And there is Leon, another Luc Besson film. Maybe that was dubbed though...?

Love Cyrano with Depardieu... haven't thought about that movie in so long! LOL

We also have Le Comte de Monte Christe with him.

But the dvd I bought had no French subtitles, so we waited a little bit.

We haven't seen that one, so I can't judge the movie.

My boys loved the Asterix movies at that age!

Perfect for tweens:  Les aventures extraordinaires d'Adèle Blanc-Sec on Netflix  This one has an ancient mummy that comes to life and horrid flying creatures.  The Extraordinary Adventures of Adele Blanc Sec.

 

Also: La Guerre Des Boutons  (the remake from 2011 on Netflix)  Some crude language and penis references if I remember correctly.  It could be called The Button War on Netflix.

 

La Boom - you could rent this from Amazon.  Was a big young teen hit from the 1990s. 

 

Google search TF1 then Replay then Informacien then La Meteo for daily videos of news and weather.

I agree with looking through Netflix. They should have a search by language function. Otherwise you could switch your location with a VPN to France and then have access to French Netflix.

How does one do this? I knew about tunnelbear for purposes of British TV but it didn't occur to me to use for Netflix. I'd need to open a brand new, French account though, no?
