Pedal Assist Bikes? (Electric Bikes)

Anybody have any experience with them, good or bad?

 

Thinking of one as a way for us to take more bike trips as a family. (Because I'm so out of shape compared to the kids, I need the help. :))

Not personal experience, but I know a few friends who have them as commuter bikes.  The only complaints I've heard (besides the cost) is that they're heavier than regular bikes so they're more of a pain to lift in and out of the train or car.  I know one friend had to try a couple before he found one he liked riding.
