visitor Posted May 13, 2016 Posted May 13, 2016 (edited) Dear all, after which SM level can I begin with BA 3A. I wanted to start after SM 2B but at this board I have seen lots of parents starting after SM3B . DS is doing standard edition its gettimg to easy for him. I already boughy BA 3A- D but just wanted to know the best starting point. Thanks in advanced Visitor Edited May 13, 2016 by visitor Quote
Roadrunner Posted May 13, 2016 Posted May 13, 2016 It's more of a maturity issue, SM2 provides necessary skills, so technically you can switch over now if your child has maturity to deal with challenges. I would suggest still continuing using SM IP books alongside of BA. Workbooks are easy, but IP books are excellent complements to BA. 2 Quote
desertflower Posted May 13, 2016 Posted May 13, 2016 I agree with the above. I started after sm 2b, but I knew my ds would love the puzzles and logic thinking that BA provides. Quote
Janeway Posted May 13, 2016 Posted May 13, 2016 Standards edition has a different scope and sequence from the US edition. Beast Academy has a placement test. I would use that. 1 Quote
visitor Posted May 14, 2016 Author Posted May 14, 2016 Thanks so it will be Textbook, IP , CWP and BA Quote
Roadrunner Posted May 14, 2016 Posted May 14, 2016 Thanks so it will be Textbook, IP , CWP and BA I would say if you are using BA, you don't need an entire lineup of SM (it's a time issue). So IP books have excellent and challenging word problems, which could eliminate the need for CWP. You can use the textbook for teaching concepts (more for you), but if I were going to use all of BA, I would only expect excercises in IP books completed. Even that's a ton. Quote
CAtoVA Posted May 14, 2016 Posted May 14, 2016 I plan on starting with Beast 3A after my DD finishes Singapore Standards 2B. She is a capable but not totally advanced math student; however, she is more motivated with problem solving and math that seems "real" so I am switching it up for 3rd grade. I also plan on her using the Singapore Standards Workbook 3A and 3B, Math Mammoth and//or MEP if she needs extra practice on any topic. I already have all those things though (from working with other kids) so I don't have to buy them. Quote
Targhee Posted May 14, 2016 Posted May 14, 2016 My third went into BA 3A after SM 2B US Ed. My second went in after 2/3 of RS C. I agree it is more about attitude/maturity to persevere through problems than whether you finish 2nd or 3rd grade math with another program. Some people want to use BA with an accelerated child who already has finished 3rd or 4th grade math, and starting back at BA 3 gives the child more breadth. Some people finish their third grade program and feel as if nothing stuck so they start BA at level 3. Some people come from a different approach that isn't as problem-solving based or is a bit less rigorous so feel they are better off starting in 3 even if they had already done 3rd grade in their program. Tumbatoo Posted May 14, 2016 Posted May 14, 2016 We're doing both. DD started BA 3A after Singapore 2B, but it was challenging and we went pretty slow while still working through Singapore 3A and B. Now she's doing BA 3B and Singapore 4A. It's been great for helping her get a solid well rounded approach. I plan to take a similar approach with my next DD. Quote
JennyD Posted May 14, 2016 Posted May 14, 2016 After going through this with two kids, I've come to the conclusion that BA3A is fine after SM2B, but BA3B just works better if the kid is already solid on multiplication facts. For my second son, this meant doing SM3A in between BA3A and 3B. Third kid has been doing Miquon so I'm not sure what sequence we'll follow, but whatever it is, I plan to do times tables before BA3B.
