ScoutTN
If you have taught it both ways, which do you prefer? I think the explicit teaching of the algorithm is poor in the 2nd edition.

kalusignan
Also listening in to hear the differences. We just went through subtraction in 2ed. No complaints.
Shoes+Ships+SealingWax
Did they do something drastic such as switch from "L to R" to "R to L", or is it merely a difference in presentation?
ScoutTN
Did they do something drastic such as switch from "L to R" to "R to L", or is it merely a difference in presentation? Still L to R. Just a difference in presentation and notation. 1st edition spends more time actually teaching how to do it on paper and has the student scan ahead to see the trades and underline the appropriate number to mark them. 2nd edition has the student use small number 1's to mark the trades/regrouping and has them do it as they work through the problem. I don't have my 1st edition book anymore, but I remember the teaching/script part to be much clearer than it is in 2nd edition. Maybe I was imagining this?
