Dianne-TX Posted May 11, 2016 Posted May 11, 2016 (edited) What absolutely has to be covered in order to get a good grasp of Spanish in this course before moving onto Spanish 2? (lesson number-wise if you can help there) I don't want to just skip or pick and choose what he does because I honestly have no idea what to skip or what is necessary to progress well. I am planning on having him take Spanish 2 with BJU and I'm sure the beginning of that will be review. I also don't want to deny him what he needs. Is there a generic Spanish placement/skills test somewhere online that he could take at some point that would help me to see if he's ready to move on or not? Or, is there a list of concepts that Spanish 1 and 2 cover so I could deteremine when he can move on. I know public schools don't do every single page, every single lesson either. He doesn't have an interest in languages or Spanish for his future so this is just an elective. Thanks for any help. ETA: A friend told me about Duolingo. Could he do that and it be enough to be considered a true credit? Just another option to consider. Edited May 11, 2016 by Dianne-TX Quote
LisaKinVA Posted May 11, 2016 Posted May 11, 2016 WRT Duolingo, there is a wide variance over what is covered. Some languages don't have any real instruction and simply rely on the program/game portion to "teach" -- other languages have more written instruction. It's free, so take a look! Check out GAVirtualLearning to give yourself an idea of what should be covered. Also, EDX has a 16 week course called Basic Spanish. Spanish 1 (for me) was mostly learning the alphabet, basic vocabulary (numbers, colors, days of the week, months, words for family, food, daily life), some verbs with conjugations, etc. We could write basic sentences (My name is, I live in, I'm hungry, I want...) Spanish two was a continuation and expansion. By the end of Spanish 2, I could easily ask my customers (I worked at McDonald's) what they wanted to eat, and understand when they replied). I wasn't fluent -- but I knew the names for all of the food we served ;). Intermediate (3rd/4th year high school) will continue expanding vocabulary and begin more translation adding complexity, with a goal of AP level being able to read and understand in the language and a certain degree of fluency both spoken and written. chiguirre Posted May 11, 2016 Posted May 11, 2016 The end of BJU 1 covers the preterite. That will be covered all over again in BJU 2. The first unit of BJU 2 reviews AR, ER and IR verbs including stem changers in the present tense. We finished up everything but the last unit before Trinqueta started Spanish 2 with BJU. She was fine and it was review for the first month. I'd make sure to practice vocabulary everyday on quizlet to keep it fresh. Quote
