Of course I knew that already.  I've been shopping for home/auto.  I found a better rate with better coverage for the auto.  Easy.  Home...not so easy.  But what I notice is a lot of these policies configure stuff in a way that makes them difficult to compare.  So I went and looked through the details of the current home insurance and noticed they made several changes to what I originally asked for.  Stuff like jacking up the deductible.  Now I could understand changes like making the limits higher since stuff gets more expensive to replace, but deductible?  No.  If that is what I elected in the beginning, why should that change?  So while I have yet to find a rate that is quite as low as what I have, it's not as straightforward as it seems.  It's not really less expensive.  It has less value.

i know I should comb through these details more carefully, but 2 reasons I do not is that their documents are confusing as all get out, and I hate my agent.

So yeah.  I will be changing auto.  I'm still on the look out for home.  I don't mind paying more.  That's how much I hate State Farm at the moment.

Anyone have a home owners insurance they can recommend? (Not something that requires specific qualifiers like USAA though.)  I tried Geico (who I'll buy the next auto insurance through), but they don't cover 2 family dwellings (I believe they use Travelers).

When I lived in Texas (28 years) the State of Texas (Insurance Board or Insurance Commission) wrote the policies. That made it easy to compare between companies, because if it was "Form XYZ" with the same coverage limits and deductibles, it was "Apples to Apples" and one could pray that the company chosen would provide good service.  I was always a member of AAA and because I traveled to/from out of state job assignments, I paid for the AAA coverage that will tow ones car farther, if necessary.  I never needed that, but I recall driving Eastbound on an Interstate  in Kansas and my car was overheating. The actual outside temperature was about 15 F.     I literally prayed, that I would make it to the next town on the Interstate where there was a Toyota dealer.  I think there were times that I had AAA membership and also Towing coverage on my Auto policy.  I was a State Farm Mutual customer, in TX, for many years. They are not perfect, but twice I had claims (once my car was broken into and there was a lot of damage) and once the car was parked at DFW Airport and I was out of the country and when I got back to my car, I thought it had been vandalized.  Actually, there had been a Hailstorm.  Both times, State Farm took care of me and I was a "happy camper"

You might want to ask your State Farm Agent about the letter you received from the company.

I second the idea of a PP that you contact an Independent Insurance Agent and tell him/her what your needs are.    One really doesn't know, until there is a claim, how the insurance company will treat one. And, one buys insurance hoping there will never be a need to use it.
