They're listing Harvey Mudd and VMI as "liberal arts colleges"??????

Harvey Mudd uses this label to describe itself on its own website:

"We’re one of the premier engineering, science and mathematics colleges in the United States.

We’re also unique because we are a liberal arts college"

And on the VMI website:

"VMI's academic program is consistently a top ranked public liberal arts college in the nation...."

VMI is definitely liberal arts. They do offer Engineering. However, the majority of degrees are not technology related. My oldest seriously considered VMI. I suggested dd consider it until we learned they couldn't meet her dietary needs.

Wow! Women apparently don't want to go to school in Texas. UT Austin, TAMU, TCU and Baylor are all on that list as having higher admission rates for women. I expected to see TAMU on the list, but the other three surprised me.

I guess I thought of VMI as a techie school because the officers we knew who were VMI graduates all had STEM majors. Possibly reflective of the fact that my DH was in a combat specialty (armored cavalry) and so were most of our friends.

Michigan Tech needs women. Usually they run pretty close to a 75% men, 25% women ratio. Embry Riddle is another one. So bad actually that the school newspaper has occasionally run very entertaining "how to date should you get an opportunity with one of the rare flowers on campus" articles. Funny! One point made was "taking her to McDonald's and then back to your dorm room to watch you and your roommate play video games until the wee hours of the morning IS NOT A DATE", LOL....something like that. I can't remember the exact wording.

So if females probably have a big edge at those two schools.

The most interesting thing to me is how high the percentages are of acceptance at most of these schools. I thought William and Mary was really tough to get into, but they accept almost one woman for every three applicants? Am I interpreting that incorrectly? The same thing with UVA, which is where my dd wants to go.

Hmmmmm.....Hmmmm...scholarship idea for Engineering boy.  :D

Add an A to the end of youngest's name, thus feminizing it, make him shave his legs, put on a dress.

Hmmm...

Lol, so this must be why it seemed like dd was getting almost daily mailings from Embry Riddle begging her to apply...

I think some of that is self selecting among applicants. If you know a school is not generous with aid, do you apply? UVA and William and Mary are state schools and aid is not hugely generous. Also if you know the average admitted student has XYZ stats and you dont, do you apply? If you have a 4.0 gpa, but never took a single AP/DE/IB class you'd be wasting your money to apply, so you apply elsewhere. If you have a challenging course load, but only above average grades and test scores there's still no point in applying.

I think admittance rates don't give a true picture. I think you have to look at profiles of the admitted class.

Hmm.. wondering with all the furor over gender identity these days if colleges should even be asking applicants these questions. Not to make light of LGBT issues, but what's to stop someone from self-identifying with another gender for the purpose of the application and then taking advantage of higher admission rates?

Nothing. Just as there is nothing presently to prevent a person from identifying as a certain race in an attempt to game affirmative action

DD was just joking with a friend about applying to Georgia Tech because the guy/gal ratio is totally in her favor. She wasn't talking about admissions though. Haha
