Can anyone point me to a well laid out curriculum that covers countries and cultures for middle school? Unit study and project-based is best.   MFW is way, way, way too expensive.  I can spend $50-100 for all the required pieces for two kids.  We have a good library and I can usually find most books I need there.

Any ideas?

Has anyone used the "Visits to..." series from Simply Charlotte Mason?  It has piqued my interest.

I've not but I previewed it pretty heavily and thought the samples were pretty lame.

We used some of Winter Promise's Children Around the World- it may be exactly what you are looking for- we used units for Japan and China and then I made my own for other countries.
