freeindeed Posted May 5, 2016 Posted May 5, 2016 I've never used a specific program. I've always taught writing as part of other subjects. I now feel like my high schooler needs more directed instruction. What program do you all recommend? Quote
EppieJ Posted May 6, 2016 Posted May 6, 2016 (edited) A couple resources you could check into: WriteShop 1&2 and Lightning Literature & Composition. We used WriteShop 1 this year (9th grade). I feel like it's a good basic writing program emphasizing creativity in both fiction and nonfiction writing. http://writeshop.com/writeshop-i-ii-overview/ We have Lightning Lit for next year, which seems more analytical in nature to me. https://www.hewitthomeschooling.com/Materials/mLLSrHigh.aspx Writer's Jungle may give you some ideas as well. It's not a curriculum so much as a method. http://www.bravewriter.com/ *Edited to add: I just went to the Brave Writer website and it turns out they have something geared specifically toward high schoolers. Looks pretty interesting. http://store.bravewriter.com/collections/home-study-courses/products/help-for-high-school Hope this helps! Edited May 6, 2016 by EppieJ 1 Quote
Haiku Posted May 6, 2016 Posted May 6, 2016 You could look into The Lively Art of Writing and/or Writing With a Thesis. 3 Quote
freesia Posted May 6, 2016 Posted May 6, 2016 Also look at Sharin Watson's The Piwer in Your Hands. Her books are very user friendly and clear. 1 Quote
SilverMoon Posted May 6, 2016 Posted May 6, 2016 The two we've mostly looked at this year is The Power in Your Hands and Wordsmith Craftsman. At this point we're leaning toward the latter. It will be on the lighter side, but I'm okay with that. It'll give her a focus and keep her writing. She can generally turn out a good essay when I simply must bother her with nonfiction writing (sarcasm), other subjects will have some writing projects in them, and she'll also be doing the last OYAN level. 1 Quote
StillStanding Posted May 7, 2016 Posted May 7, 2016 High school level Lightning Literature does not really teach writing. We loved LL7 and LL8 but this year we were very disappointed with LL American. The book selections are good, but the questions are just mostly comprehension/recollection questions. There were essays to write but the program expects you to already know how to write an essay. Quote
laughing lioness Posted May 8, 2016 Posted May 8, 2016 I have been a long time IEW fan and recommend it.I used Lost Tools of Writing for the first time this past year and am a total fan. Fantastic writing program! And the Grammar of Poetry- learn meters and tropes- everything you need for Creative Writing. Quote
