domestic_engineer Posted May 5, 2016 Posted May 5, 2016 Can anyone recommend a brand/source for sturdy dressers for the kiddos? Thanks! Quote
Catalytic Posted May 5, 2016 Posted May 5, 2016 Are you looking for cheap sturdy dressers or are you looking to spend quite a bit? If you're not afraid of bed bugs, check local used venues (Craigslist, FB groups, thrift shops, etc) I'm not sure where you would buy new, I'd guess a decent furniture store might have solid wood dressers. justasque Posted May 5, 2016 Posted May 5, 2016 Stay away from IKEA's 6-drawer MALM dresser, as it has had some serious problems with tipping over and injuring (or even killing) children. For any dresser you choose, make sure to pull all the drawers out, in various combinations (all out, just the top, just the top two, etc.) to check the stability; remember that they will be heavier when full. Don't just test for tipping. Bolt that stuff to the wall. It should be standard now to bolt any dressers/boolshelves/TVs/etc to the wall. I just bought shelves from IKEA and they all included wall mounting hardware. I'm sure this is because of previous issues, but we've secured all our furniture long before anyone told us to. Little kids pull and climb on stuff. It's so very dangerous. I really don't think tipping because of climbing or pulling on heavy furniture can be laid at the feet of the manufacturer. Anything can be tipped if not secured properly. 6 Quote

I was actually going to recommend the MALM dressers because they are by far the best dressers I've found for the money. Tipping has nothing to do with the manufacturer and everything to do with the fact that you've got a tall piece of furniture where the center of gravity can be easily shifted. I assumed by now it was common knowledge to secure anything tippable. Every book case, dresser and even my stove that I've bought in at least the last 10 years has come with all the parts to secure it to the wall. 2 Quote
BlsdMama Posted May 6, 2016 Posted May 6, 2016 I got a solid wood Thomasville at Goodwill for $20. That thing is pretty much near indestructible. On the other hand we have a few Ikea... They were a waste of $$ imo, unless you rarely move them, aren't hard on them, and don't care that they won't last a really long time. (They look nice.) I'd rather go with solid wood (used) than particle board new, for the same $$. 2 Quote
LucyStoner Posted May 6, 2016 Posted May 6, 2016 Our IKEA hemmes line of dressers have held up very well and we have moved them plus the boys are hard on their furniture. They are in perfect condition. We have three of the dressers and two of the nightstands with a drawer. We got ours in 2007. Used dressers in good shape are like unicorns around here so when I tired of looking for them, I just got it all at IKEA to be done with it all. We made a repair to one drawer bottom but that was because the drawer was way too over stuffed/filled with heavy stuff- our son's fault not IKEAs. 1 Quote
ksr5377 Posted May 6, 2016 Posted May 6, 2016 the IKEA Hemnes line is nice, since it's solid wood. However, my favorite dresser finds have been at auctions. I think the most I have ever paid for one is about $20. I will concede that this does take much more of your time though. It may take 3 or 4 auctions until you find what you need. Quote
