MeganW Posted May 4, 2016 Posted May 4, 2016 My son just turned 11, and will be going into 5th grade in the fall. He will be taking a class that uses MP's Latina Christina. He has not had any Latin before (none of the other kids have either), but he is nervous about it and asked me to get him a fun, light, intro Latin program to go through this summer. Are we way too old for Song School Latin? Is there anything else that is light and FUN to serve as an intro to Latin? Quote
Dmmetler Posted May 4, 2016 Posted May 4, 2016 The ACL teaching packet for the Exploratory Latin Exam would serve. It's designed for that age group, for either a once a week exploratory class over a school year, or about 6 weeks. Honestly, it's a lot like SSL, except that the worksheets look a lot more like older elementary/middle school. There are a lot of redundant worksheets/activities, since it's designed for a classroom setting. http://www.etclassics.org/pages/materials Quote
Caviar Posted May 4, 2016 Posted May 4, 2016 Well, seeing as it's MP, you could use their Prima Latina course, which they use for 3rd grade before a student uses Latina Christiana. It might not be fun, but it will be light for his age, and it will have him ready for Latina Christiana. Quote
Peplophoros Posted May 4, 2016 Posted May 4, 2016 Song School Latin would be a mistake. Lots of copywork (handwriting practice), and the illustrations are babyish..even my 3rd grader found it boring. I highly, highly, recommend Getting Started with Latin. It's fabulous. 1 Quote

SeaConquest Posted May 5, 2016 Posted May 5, 2016 We are reading Minimus now to finish out our year (we've done SSL 1 and 2), and my son is really enjoying it. Lots of interesting cultural stuff mixed in with Latin. I wouldn't expect much retention, if any, from Minimus (for us, it is more reinforcing what we have already learned in SSL), but it is a fun supplement. 1 Quote
MeganW Posted May 6, 2016 Author Posted May 6, 2016 Oh, so glad I hadn't yet pressed the "buy" button on SSL! Thanks, friends! Quote
