creekland Posted April 30, 2016 Posted April 30, 2016 Just a public statement for all to know--in case you did not know already. (Thanks girlfriend!) Ok, so I was hopping on to send you a more thorough pm... Seriously, your ds looks/sounds great (and fit) and it was nice meeting him. He ought to be well on his way back on the trail soon (still after tomorrow's rain from what he was telling us). If he were my boy, I'd have no worries and would be glad this hit (if it had to) when it did so he could take a little break from the weather and all. It was really nice of him to hike all the way up here to meet us. I love meeting Hive folks (or offspring) I've heard so much about! :coolgleamA: Don't worry a bit about how I'm feeling. 'Taint contagious and fun distractions help balance things out mentally. I need them. Today was a welcome surprise on this end. Of course, at some point we need to get together IRL too. 15 Quote

Popular Post Jane in NC Posted April 30, 2016 Author Popular Post Posted April 30, 2016 Some more background: The Boy, as he is known, is stranded in a motel room recovering from what we hope is Noro and not giardia. He needs to be near a toilet but he also needs bland food. Taking a risk, I sent a PM to Creekland who I believed lived potentially near where he was (although "near" can be a relative term). She and her dear husband not only bought some groceries for my son, they delivered them to him. This for a person that they had never met! Creekland's oldest and my son applied to colleges at the same time. I think a number of WTMers have bonded through the years in this way over the boards. So even if we have not met each other or our kids, we feel as though we know them. I have often called myself a Well Trained Auntie. Creekland proved today that she is a Well Trained Angel, delivering some magic when it was desperately needed. We are so grateful. 67 Quote
creekland Posted April 30, 2016 Posted April 30, 2016 Creekland proved today that she is a Well Trained Angel, delivering some magic when it was desperately needed. Not really. Just a friend doing what friends do and enjoying every minute of it. Yes folks, by the time your kids get to college, you may have developed quite a relationship with other Boardies, even if you hadn't previously met them. Sue in St Pete has been incredibly helpful for my youngest son attending college in her home town. (He needed a hurricane evacuation plan - fleeing to PA is hardly it! What do I do??? Well, there is this boardie who lives there...) She was also cool enough to go watch his latest acting bit in the school play when we couldn't be there due to a conflict with middle son's dancing and juggling. And she might have taken him some well loved banana bread at least once! Great lady! Catherine's oldest and my middle son attend the same college. They've gotten to know each other via juggling and I know I could count on her to do anything needed (and vice versa) if she were there visiting and we weren't. Her son is a pretty cool kid too. We got to know him better while giving him a partial ride there once (partial due to picking him up part way, not dropping him off before we got to the destination!). Had I been more in tune with life, there's a parent I could have gotten to know better when oldest went to school too. I was just young and clueless back then (sigh). The internet makes our world quite small - and parts of that can be quite enjoyable! There's a reason I'm retired from homeschooling, but still here. There's a real family aspect to it now. 31 Quote
Starr Posted April 30, 2016 Posted April 30, 2016 It's so true how the board works. I've had emergency phone numbers for my dd in every country she's visited. She says between the "site of all things" and the church she'll never be able to hide out. :D 9 Quote
Rachel Posted April 30, 2016 Posted April 30, 2016 That is wonderful! I hope your son is feeling better soon. 3 Quote

creekland Posted April 30, 2016 Posted April 30, 2016 She's pretty great, I can vouch IRL. :D We really should plan another get together this summer or maybe fall... I've loved the two we've had. It's fun getting to know Boardies and their families IRL. May and the beginning of June are a whirlwind here. I think the dust settles by the 2nd week in June. (College/school academic years are done then - and our travel budget is empty.) Middle son is bringing some friends here for Father's Day weekend, but I wouldn't expect we'd want to get together that weekend anyway. 4 Quote
creekland Posted April 30, 2016 Posted April 30, 2016 She's on my list of boardies I'd meet at the airport :) If only the Grand Pumba of the Universe had let us win the Powerball lottery back when it was huge. (sigh) (Many of us could have met - and had help with college/medical expenses, etc.) 2 Quote

Kareni Posted May 1, 2016 Posted May 1, 2016 My husband was on a backpacking trip when he was in his early twenties. Sound familiar, Jane? After leaving the trail, he ate a turkey dinner at a restaurant and ended up with food poisoning. He stayed for several days in a hotel and says he was so sick that he honestly wished for death. He stumbled out at one point to buy apple juice and vanilla ice cream. I think it's safe to say that he would have loved to have had Creekland appear on the scene. I shared this post with my husband and said that there are a lot of good people in the world. Regards, Kareni 3 Quote

We do prowl around a bit, so 'tis best to time illnesses to fit our schedule. 5 Quote

ktgrok Posted May 2, 2016 Posted May 2, 2016 Can I ask, was this an AT thing? A friend of my son's is currently attempting a thru hike (which through do I want there?? ) and I would love to know if Creekland (or other boardies) are on the path if he had an emergency. He's a fellow homeschooler and an adventure nut. 3 Quote

Late August would work for me as long as I don't take any long term teaching assignments. None are planned at the moment. By plotting something this far out I can usually work our schedule around it. ;) Late August anyone? ps Did you have a location in mind? Where we've met before in Littlestown PA has been ideal "space and cost" wise, but I'm open to other places if others want to go somewhere different. 3 Quote
Nan in Mass Posted May 2, 2016 Posted May 2, 2016 Jane! I was going to suggest Creekland, too, as a possibility for your boy if he didn,t mend soon! Creekland, for us all to assume you would help if you possibly could this way says much about you! Boardies have helped my children in person before. I, too, am retired but still here because I'm used to being part of a hive. Three cheers for SWB for relieving the isolation of homeschooling. Nan, who has met some boardies in real life and is hoping to meet some of the Mass. ones eventually. : ) 9 Quote

Jane in NC Posted May 2, 2016 Author Posted May 2, 2016 (edited) Update: the Boy returned to the trail today. While we normally only hear from him once or twice a week, we have asked that he text us so that his mother won't worry herself to death. Long distance hikers receive amazing support from the hiking community and others who live near trails. There are churches and service clubs that make a point of offering breakfast or gifts of fresh fruit along the way. My son thought it was awesome when a boy scout troop offered to carry out trash. Every ounce a long distance hiker carries adds to his burden. Thanks for the good thoughts, folks. And stay tuned. A well trained adventure kid or student may soon be in your neighborhood! Nan in Mass Posted May 2, 2016 Posted May 2, 2016 Glad to hear about the texts. I am sure he'll be ok, but under the circumstances, I think this makes sense. "So I don't worry too much" is a perfectly reasonable reason. You would do the same if things were reversed. : ) Nan 3 Quote

I'm thinking we could use a spin off thread once we get an idea of a time (or times to choose from). I would do late August if I had to, but I'd prefer the 2nd half of June, all of July or early August. We'll be starting school up probaby around the 3rd week of August and I'd prefer not to have to take a day off so early in our school year. I can flexible if I must, but meeting during summer break would be so much easier. Quote

Perhaps we need the spin off thread to figure out a (general) time that works for most of us? I can't start one now. I need to go de-scuzz for that appt in an hour"ish."
