Sweet Home Alabama Posted April 30, 2016 Posted April 30, 2016 Please review this course for me. Ds would be taking Alg. II at the same time. Is this ok? He has been talking about geology as a major which is heavier on chemistry and physics than biology, so I'm changing gears. He completed the first Apologia Chemistry book in 10th grade this year. For the moment, I'm thinking we'll do this (or something similar) for 11th, and an algebra-based physics in 12th. (He used Hewitt's Conceptual Physics in 9th). I'm also thinking about spanning biology over 11th and 12th so that we work that in. Along with other college-prep courses we're planning, this will be a really full schedule for ds. He'll have Alg II in 11th and hopefully pre-cal in 12th. For the moment, I need feedback on Apologia Advanced Chemistry. If not this, what? You all know that I don't want to teach science! ;) I don't think BJU chemistry gives us the taste of AP. I'm not trying to necessarily do an all out AP class. I think ds needs more of an honors level. I think doing AAC at home would be a good balance. Quote
Sweet Home Alabama Posted May 1, 2016 Author Posted May 1, 2016 Bumping. Hoping someone can give some help. :) Quote
Jane Elliot Posted May 1, 2016 Posted May 1, 2016 Two of my sons did it as seniors after chemistry and biology and concurrently with physics. I hear Apologia chemistry has changed a lot. This was 4+ years ago, so we used the 2nd edition chemistry and the 1st edition advanced chemistry. It was self-teaching for them as they had become very independent by that point, but they both enjoyed it a lot and thought it was helpful to them as science majors in college. Quote
mschickie Posted May 1, 2016 Posted May 1, 2016 I have not used it but my nephew did. He liked it and now has his masters in Chemistry. Quote
StillStanding Posted May 4, 2016 Posted May 4, 2016 I actually taught it to a group of three students when my daughter needed to take it three years ago. It is written to the student and It was not hard to follow. Labs are not very complicated. I would not call it AP, it is just fine for a second year chemistry course and it prepared my daughter well for college chemistry. Quote
