EmseB Posted April 29, 2016 Posted April 29, 2016 (edited) Canister Bagged Can be used for plush carpet + hard floor Good for pets and long haired humans $500 max So far I found an electrolux that meets all but one of the requirements, and I like the Mieles, but it seems they aren't designed for plusher carpet or they are $$$$. Prairie~Phlox Posted April 29, 2016 Posted April 29, 2016 I would check Sears. https://m.sears.com/search=Canister%20vacuum 1 Quote
Pawz4me Posted April 29, 2016 Posted April 29, 2016 (edited) I bought this one a little over a year ago and have been very happy with it. The bags are spendy but excellent. We have two cats and one (very low shedding) dog. Nobody here has long hair, though. (Edited because it might be more helpful if I atually put the link in. ;)). hornblower Posted April 29, 2016 Posted April 29, 2016 I'm still looking for the perfect vac, though I want an upright. It's the carpet + long hair combo that seems to kill vacs here. Pet hair is fine but long hair is awful on vacuums ime. The beater brushes needed for carpet get the long hair wound up on them and kill the beater motor or wreck the bearings on the beater assembly itself. I have panasonics and I'm reasonably happy with them and just resigned to having to replace the beater assembly every once in a while. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk 1 Quote
kewb Posted April 29, 2016 Posted April 29, 2016 I have an elecrolux. 23 years and still going strong on my carpets, wood floors, and pet hair. However, I know they have become aerus electroluc and I don't know if the brand still holds up. When the time comes to replace I have been looking at Miele and Oreck. Quote
EmseB Posted April 29, 2016 Author Posted April 29, 2016 I had a Dyson that lasted me 10+ years* and I loved it! The long hair was killer, but I could take out the beater bar and cut/pull the hair of every couple of months. It made a horrible ratcheting noise if it was stuck, so the motor never got ruined. I have decided that I really want a bagged vac if possible, though. *my then 2yo took off a very full diaper, swung it around, hit a bed post with it and those little beads went everywhere. I scooped up as many as I could, but some of them had to be vacuumed. Even after buying completely new filters for the vac it always smelled like pee whenever I ran it after that. :yuck: Quote
Suzanne in ABQ Posted April 29, 2016 Posted April 29, 2016 Go to ABCVacuum.com They have a shopper's helper tool on the website. You enter in your list of requirements, and they match you up with a vacuum. There's no obligation to buy from them, but they have good prices and free shipping. 1 Quote

It's turned with circulating air. When the hair gets too thick, it just stops turning, and you can easily take it apart (no tools required, just a quarter or a nickel) to clean it. I have a Panasonic as well. I like that the brush roller is chrome (no nicks) and that it's large (long hair doesn't get wound up as readily. 1 Quote
Catalytic Posted April 30, 2016 Posted April 30, 2016 Another vote for Dyson. LOVE that vacuum. Easily repaired, too, if you can figure out the problem (some places will dx it free and parts can be had on eBay, and videos on YouTube to repair it) Quote
Spryte Posted April 30, 2016 Posted April 30, 2016 Love our Electrolux. No idea about the carpet part though. If that was the one requirement it didn't meet... I wouldn't know (we have no carpet due to breathing issues). But it hit all of your other points. Adore it. Quote
