GinaPagnato
My ds will be busy with DE and other activities next year. I need a US history curriculum that won't take loads of time, that's straight forward, and that uses video lectures so he's not having to self-teach. I don't even care if it's just textbook and DVD stuff...and I can't believe I'm saying that because I have NEVER homeschooled that way, BUT he's not as history-inclined as my other dc, and honestly, he's got other courses at the CC that he will need to spend more time on. Suggestions, please?
foxbridgeacademy
I'm almost done with our US History 1 (covers pre-Columbian through Reconstruction). There's textbook reading but only about 20 pages per week and I include the Lectures from The Great Courses US History 2nd edition. There are optional Documentaries, Biographies, and writing assignments, also found an excellent PDF study guide for the textbook that I'm reworking. I should be done in a couple weeks but I could email you a in progress copy. I currently have a rough draft schedule that I can email. I hope by July to have at least the full study guide (with chapter outline, comprehension questions and discussion topics) ready. I'm going to try to add in Literature and Government (or we may just buy something like EIL) but that will be after I'm done with the history (and other courses I'm working on). RootAnn
Funda Funda has a US history syllabus that you could use as a base. (I wouldn't bother with the Critical Thinking books. You could tweak the rest to suit your kid & time.)Hewitt homeschooling has a US history syllabus that you could buy and use, too. Edited to add links. Hilltopmom
We started out with the FundaFunda one & liked it but wound up switching around. We did use all the GC lectures & essays. Wound up using half of a discard ps textbook. It was ok. Great courses also has a high school version of US History with accompanying workbook you could look into, if you aren't looking for as high level.
Susie in CA
We are planning on US History next year. I think it will be pretty open and go. Ds will read @ 40 pages a week in Amerika: A Narrative History. We are planning on one one assignment per week based on his reading. This could be writing about a particular detail or point; or making a map or.... I plan on letting him choose what to do with this. Each semester he'll do a larger writing project on a topic in history. Again, I'll let him choose the topic.
