lizlatorre Posted April 27, 2016 Posted April 27, 2016 I am curious.....I see lots of feedback in other posts about Memoria Press Latin. I haven't seen any comment, positive or negative about Latin for Children, but I notice that most folks, if they have done Song School Latin switch from, CAP to MP or Lively Latin. Anyone out there use Latin for Children? If so, has it been a positive or negative experience? Quote
tmstranger Posted April 27, 2016 Posted April 27, 2016 I've used it. Honestly, I've seen a lot of positive comments about LfC. I think some people really love it. I switched to MP after one year with CAP. We prefer MP. For me, it's easier to teach. It has better teacher instructions (IMO). My son did retain a lot of what he learned in CAP, but I'm glad we made the change. I do think it comes down to preference, though. If I were you, I'd look over the samples carefully and decide which approach appeals to you the most. They are both good. 1 Quote
JudoMom Posted April 27, 2016 Posted April 27, 2016 I've used SSL, LfCA & LfCB, Latin Alive 1 & Latin Alive 2. Over the years I've tried just about everything out there for Latin. I got tired of jumping around, so last year I decided that I liked CAP's programs best and that they could take us as far as we wanted to go. My boys like them just fine (between the 5, I've got opinions ranging from a strong dislike to a strong like of Latin). 2 Quote
2_girls_mommy Posted April 27, 2016 Posted April 27, 2016 I bought the Spanish for Children and hated it. Its been a couple of years, so I am going off of memory here, but it seemed to teach more than one tense per lesson, which was really too much to learn properly and memorize. Also, like PP said, there aren't good teaching instructions either. MP really breaks down the lessons and tells you how to teach it. They break down the lessons into really memorizing one tense or whatever they are on and then building on that, and then reviewing it, and working on it some more :). I didn't buy the Latin, but when I looked at it, it seemed the same as the Spanish. It's an introduction to Spanish grammar I guess, but its not enough to really learn it. I felt the Latin looked the same to me even though I don't have real experience with trying to make it work. 2 Quote
h2bh Posted April 27, 2016 Posted April 27, 2016 We have used LFC A and B as well as Latin Alive 2 (with one year of Wheelocks in there.). I love the CAP products. I think they are easy to teach and headventureland is a fun motivator for my kids. (It also allows Latin to get minimally done even on busy days.). I do think it is a preference decision. Quote
basketcase Posted April 27, 2016 Posted April 27, 2016 I love Latin for Children. The student text and activity book are engaging, and my kid is happy with it. It's one of those subjects that causes no angst around the house, so I'm not looking to change until we run out of books! Quote
mschickie Posted April 28, 2016 Posted April 28, 2016 I used LfC when dd was in elementary school and I will be doing Latin Alive when she is in high school ( we took a break from Latin to study French). I love their programs and I highly recommend them to folks. Quote
elegantlion Posted April 28, 2016 Posted April 28, 2016 We use LfC A & B and part of Latin Alive 1 - at which point ds negotiated to switch to Japanese. I like CAP products and LfC was good for us. It seemed more fun than Memoria Press products and we enjoyed the videos that went with all of them. Latin Alive reminds me very much of the language instruction I received in high school (albeit in Spanish). LfC was fairly easy to teach without a background in Latin. It has been several years since we used any, so I'm not sure how the program has been updated. CAP used to put a very large sample of their products online, so they are easy to try before you buy. CAP makes their teacher resources a copy of the student text with answer, this was very important to me as my teaching style was very hands on. Memoria does this too, but it's another element that makes a Latin program designed for homeschoolers attractive. 1 Quote
