bttrflyvld Posted April 26, 2016 Posted April 26, 2016 Any suggestions for programming/coding games or programs for the early elementary age? (for the computer not tablet) Quote
silver Posted April 26, 2016 Posted April 26, 2016 There are a lot of fun options here: https://code.org/learn 2 Quote
ondreeuh Posted April 27, 2016 Posted April 27, 2016 (edited) My 8 y/o has done some scratch/blockly coding and was bored with it. I ordered a book from Bitsbox and it is awesome. It has you code through heir website using their inventory of objects and sounds, and you pick up coding as you work through the mini games. They have a monthly subscription which we might do. I'm not sure which coding language it uses, but it's fun. Era: it's a simplified JavaScript/HTML 5. http://Bitsbox.com Edited April 27, 2016 by ondreeuh 1 Quote

SilverMoon Posted April 27, 2016 Posted April 27, 2016 (edited) If you sign up for a teacher account at Code.org you can enroll your students into the various courses they offer. After those mine were able to play more effectively on Scratch. For littles just breaking in games like LightBot, The Foos, and such are great. They have all drag and drop commands and don't require much reading. Edited April 27, 2016 by SilverMoon Quote

SilverMoon Posted April 27, 2016 Posted April 27, 2016 I forgot about Code Monkey. We only did the free version, but I'd consider paying a small fee for that one for ambitious younger coders. Quote
Shoes+Ships+SealingWax Posted April 28, 2016 Posted April 28, 2016 My DS has & enjoys the Foos, Scratch & Kodable. They all approach it a slightly different way. Kodable eventually works up to teaching JavaScript 1 Quote
RenaInTexas Posted April 29, 2016 Posted April 29, 2016 My kiddos (7&9) enjoy Scratch. We use this book, Scratch Programming in Easy Steps, because it has lessons that you can follow to add new skills and ultimately create your own program from scratch. :) (pun-not intended). My ds9 can read the book himself and follow the steps. Ds7, needs more assistance. 1 Quote
3 ladybugs Posted May 1, 2016 Posted May 1, 2016 I just saw ozobot.com in my Facebook news feed and thought of this thread. It might be helpful. 1 Quote
Farrar Posted May 1, 2016 Posted May 1, 2016 We played with the ozobots at the scifest the other week. They were cute and fun. Definitely perfect for budding little coders. I'm not sure how much they cost though. Scratch is the typical starting point for kids these days, though there are other options. Super Scratch Programming Adventure is a good opening book. 1 Quote
